Stardew Valley Golden Walnuts Guide: Ginger Island Routes and Unlocks
Where to find all 130 Golden Walnuts on Ginger Island, what each puzzle pays out, and what every parrot upgrade costs.
Ginger Island is Stardew Valley's endgame playground, and the whole place runs on one currency: Golden Walnuts. The parrots take them as payment for bridges, a farmhouse, a beach resort, even a little train system. There are 130 of them tucked into bushes, buried in the sand, and locked behind puzzles, and every last one counts toward Perfection. The trip starts with a broken boat in the back of Willy's shop.
Opening Ginger Island
Fixing Willy's Boat
The island sits behind the busted boat in the back room of Willy's Fish Shop, and that room stays locked until you've finished the Community Center bundles or wrapped up the Joja route and seen the warehouse cutscene. Once that's done, Willy mails you an invite and the back door opens.
The boat needs three batches of materials, and they're the real gate for most saves:
- 200 Hardwood for the hull
- 5 Iridium Bars for the anchor
- 5 Battery Packs for the ticket stand
Drop all three off and you get an overnight cutscene of Willy and Robin putting the thing back together. From the next morning on, a ticket costs 1,000g, and that price covers the round trip. The ride home is technically free anyway - you just walk into the boat on the island's southern beach and sail back. The catch is shop hours, since the ticket stand keeps Willy's schedule. Night trips need a Warp Totem: Island, or an Island Obelisk later on. Both drop you on the southern dock at any hour, and warping in is the only way to get there while the shop's closed.
Your First Landing
The boat docks on Island South, and only one path is walkable at first - two huge turtles are fast asleep on the other two. Leo shows up and bolts east into the jungle, so follow him.
In Leo's hut, talk to the parrot. It wants exactly 1 Golden Walnut to shoo the turtle off the north path, and your first walnut pretty much always goes here. It basically has to - the beach parrot that opens the west side won't even appear until Leo's parrot has been paid. After that, a Magma Sprite meets you back at the beach and leads you north toward the volcano, which works out as a free tour of where the late-game nuts live.
Then it's just a matter of scraping together 10 walnuts for the beach parrot to wake the west turtle. Bushes, dig spots, and the handful of East puzzles cover that faster than you'd think.
One quirk worth knowing early: the island has its own weather. A storm on your farm tells you nothing about conditions out there, and the reverse is true too. Your TV starts showing a separate Ginger Island forecast the day after your first visit, and two of the puzzles below care about island rain a lot.
Walnuts in Island Areas
There are 130 walnuts per save, and the running count sits right under your name in the Skills tab. They're shared in multiplayer, so farmhands can split the hunt. Here's where they actually live, area by area.
Island East (the jungle)
The starter zone, and it's mostly cheap finds:
- One walnut sits in a bush on the path toward Leo's hut.
- Chop the tree inside Leo's hut with an axe for another.
- A hidden path east of the stairs to Leo's hut leads to the Gem Bird shrine, with a bush just south of it.
- The banana altar right by those stairs pays 3.
- The Gem Birds puzzle pays 5.
Island West (the farm side)
This is the fattest chunk of the island once you're in.
- Harvesting on the island farm. Every one-and-done crop you pick by hand (nothing that regrows or needs a scythe) has a 5% chance of coming up a walnut, up to 5 total.
- The Gourmand Frog, worth 15. That's the biggest single lump outside the volcano.
- Mussel nodes on the beach south of the farm: 10% chance each, up to 5.
- The Pirate's Wife quest from Birdie's shack pays 5.
- The Simon Says crystal cave near the Tiger Slime Grove pays 3.
Then there's the long tail of one-offs: a walnut inside the shipwreck (hidden path at the wreck's west corner), one for whacking the green mole, a bush behind a coconut tree by the pond, dig spots shaped like starfish triangles, starfish diamonds, X marks, and diamonds of indents, plus a bunch of bushes along the cliffs and around the Tiger Slime Grove - including one circle of grass in the grove with a nut under the middle tile.
The farm itself is 879 plantable tiles, grows any crop in any season, and has no crows, so it's worth using while you hunt.
Island North and the Volcano
- Dig spots everywhere: stone circles, flower circles, a sand patch by the field office, and two hidden passages at the far northwest where Leo sometimes hangs out.
- The Island Field Office pays 6 for the large animal fossil set, 3 for the snake set, and 1 each for a Mummified Frog and a Mummified Bat. The two island surveys pay 1 each.
- One walnut sits in a curved tree northeast of the volcano entrance, and only a slingshot knocks it down.
- The Volcano Dungeon holds 17 on its own: up to 5 from breaking rocks, 5 from kills, 5 from metal crates, and 1 each from a common chest and a rare chest. Two more grow on plants at the Forge up top, and two more sit in bushes on the south exit of the lava river at the entrance.
The lava crossing at the volcano door needs a watering can and resets every day, which is why the bridge upgrade later on feels so good.
Island South and the Southeast
Most of this corner wakes up after the resort goes up, since that's what clears the debris east of the dock.
- One walnut on a bush on the upper cliff, through a hidden route behind a tree just east of the stairs to Island North.
- The first cast in the star-shaped tide pool on Island Southeast always lands a walnut.
- A diamond of yellow starfish nearby - dig the center.
- The mermaid puzzle on rainy days pays 5.
- Darts with the pirates pays up to 3.
- One more is buried in exposed sand by the barrels in the Pirate Cove.
Two freebies people miss
The first Golden Coconut you crack open at Clint's back home is a walnut. Coconuts drop all over the island, so grab one early. And fishing anywhere on Ginger Island carries a 15% chance per cast of pulling up a walnut until you've landed 5 that way. Cast into the tide pool while you're down there and the count climbs on its own.
Puzzles and Hidden Walnuts
The banana altar
Walk up to the altar by the stairs to Leo's hut and leave a banana on it. A gorilla wanders out and hands over 3 walnuts. That's the whole puzzle, and yes, any banana works.
Gem Birds (5 walnuts)
On rainy island days, a single gem bird spawns somewhere and flies off when you approach, dropping a gem where it stood. Where it stood is the entire puzzle, because each spot belongs to a region:
- North: just south of the Island Field Office tent
- East: mid-path in the jungle toward Leo's hut
- South: the southwest beach near the docks
- West: at the pond east of Birdie's hut
The shrine east of Leo's stairs has four pedestals carved with island landmarks laid out like a compass - volcano for north, waves for south, palm tree for east, heart for west. Put each region's gem on its matching pedestal. Drops are always one of amethyst, aquamarine, emerald, ruby, or topaz, and here's the shortcut: any gem of the right type works, not just the one the bird dropped. With four pedestals you can brute force the whole thing in a handful of guesses. All four placed correctly gets you 5 walnuts.
Rain Totems used on the island force a bird to show up the next day, which turns this from a waiting game into an afternoon errand. Island rain, though - a totem on your mainland farm does nothing for the birds.
The mermaid song (5 walnuts)
Rainy day, Island Southeast, mermaid on the big rock. Bring five Flute Blocks. Place one at each set of stones on the beach, then tune each block by the stones sitting above it: a big stone counts as 5 clicks, a small one as 1. The listed solutions are 2, 11, 9, 5, 7 clicks across the five blocks, or 1, 10, 8, 4, 6 - both play the same song. Then run past the blocks left to right and she pays out 5 walnuts.
Darts with the pirates (3 walnuts)
Pirates take over the Cove after 8pm on dry, even-numbered days of the season. If you're inside when they arrive, you get tossed out the entrance - annoying, but you can walk right back in. Each round of darts you win pays a walnut, for the first three wins only. Wear a pirate hat or eye patch and the bartender pours you a free mead, which feels very on brand.
Simon Says crystals (3 walnuts)
In a cave northeast of the Tiger Slime Grove, click the lion statue and copy the color pattern back at the crystal pedestals. Five rounds, faster each time, and a fail restarts from round one. The game quietly takes pity on you, though: four fails slows down rounds three and up, six slows it more, and eight skips the final round entirely. Three walnuts at the end.
Dig spots and journal scraps
Most buried walnuts sit at the center of something deliberately shaped. Circles of stones, circles of flowers, starfish laid out in triangles or diamonds, X marks in tide pools, diamonds of indents in the sand. If the ground decor looks arranged, dig the middle.
Journal Scraps work like Secret Notes and always show up in order. Two of them are straight-up treasure maps: scrap #4 marks a spot north of Birdie's hut that hides a Quality Bobber plus a walnut, and scrap #6 marks a corner tile by a curved palm southeast of the farmhouse that hides a Pearl plus a walnut. The mean part is that the dig spots produce nothing until you've actually read the scrap, so don't skip them.
The field office surveys
Free Professor Snail by popping the boulder at the mushroom cave with any bomb, then poke around his tent. Two surveys ask you to count things on the island: purple flowers (the answer is 22) and purple starfish (18). One walnut each. The fossil sets are the bigger payday - 6 for large animals, 3 for snakes - and bone nodes spawn daily at the dig site to feed them.
Spending Walnuts on Upgrades
Every reward and its price:
| Reward | Cost | What it does | | --- | --- | --- | | Island North access | 1 | Wakes the turtle on the north path | | Island West access | 10 | Wakes the turtle on the west path | | Island Farmhouse | 20 | Bed, kitchen, and shipping bin on the island | | Farmhouse Mailbox | 5 | Read your mail without sailing home | | Farm Obelisk | 20 | Warps you from the island farmhouse to your main farm | | Island Dig Site | 10 | Repairs the bridge to the dig site | | Island Trader | 10 | Opens the barter shop in Island North | | Volcano Bridge | 5 | Permanent bridge over the lava at the volcano door | | Volcano Exit Shortcut | 5 | Escape hatch from Volcano floor 5 up to Island North | | Island Resort | 20 | Beach resort; also opens Island Southeast and the Pirate Cove | | Parrot Express | 10 | Train stops at the volcano, farm, dig site, jungle, and docks |
That's 116 walnuts for the full set. Anything past that converts at Qi's Walnut Room, 1 walnut for 2 Qi Gems.
So what order should you buy in?
The sequence matters more than it looks:
- North access (1) - forced, basically.
- West access (10) - the west holds the most walnuts, plus the farm and the frog.
- Farmhouse (20) - sleeping on the island is the single biggest comfort jump out there. Volcano runs stop being a one-shot morning, and the shipping bin means your island haul sells without a boat trip.
- Dig Site (10) - feeds the field office fossils and respawns mining nodes daily.
- Resort (20) - unlocks the whole southeast corner, the mermaid, and darts.
- Parrot Express (10) - cheap for how much walking it deletes.
- Trader (10), mailbox (5), volcano bridge (5), exit shortcut (5) whenever they're convenient.
- Farm Obelisk (20) last. It's nice, but the boat home is already free, and twenty nuts is a lot to pull out of late-game hunting.
The resort has a bonus beyond the puzzles: villagers wander in from 11am to 6pm on dry non-festival days, Gus runs a bar when he visits, and you can close the whole thing off at the changing room toggle if you'd rather keep the beach quiet.
Qi's Walnut Room
At 100 walnuts, the big door in Island West swings open. Inside there's a Special Orders board like the one in town, a vending machine that takes Qi Gems, and the Perfection Tracker statue. Small print: the first walnut you ever find doesn't count toward the 100, so the room really opens on your 101st. Once you've bought all 116 walnuts' worth of upgrades, the leftovers trade in at 2 Qi Gems apiece - 14 spare nuts if you started with nothing else to spend on, which works out to 28 gems.
Tracking Missing Walnuts
The count under your name in the Skills tab tells you how far from 130 you are. When the number stops moving, the parrot in Leo's hut gives one free hint a day, sorted by area - stuff like "3 buried in the north" or "stripey slimes to the west". Hints update as you go, and if you finish off a hint's walnuts the same day you got it, the parrot goes quiet until tomorrow.
The hints cover 123 of the 130. The seven it never mentions: the bush just south of the Gem Bird shrine, the 3 from the banana altar, and the 3 darts wins. So if you're sitting at 123 with a silent parrot, that's your entire to-do list.
Two safety nets exist. The chat command /recountnuts (open chat with T on PC) fixes the known bug where the counter sticks at 129/130 even though you've found them all - worth trying before you tear the island apart. And the Golden Joja Parrot, northwest of the volcano entrance, will find your remaining walnuts for 10,000g each, delivered overnight while you sleep. The game warns that paying it robs you of the "true Ginger Island experience," and it's right. Still, talking to it costs nothing, and the price it quotes tells you exactly how many you're missing - a free head count before you decide.
The nuts matter past the island, too. All 130 count for 5% of your Perfection score on the tracker in Qi's room, and Perfection gates the Summit, the Statue of True Perfection, and golden chickens. Fourteen walnuts is the most you can have left after the full upgrade set, and at the Joja parrot's rate that'd run you 140,000g - so dig the weird starfish shapes yourself and let the bird handle, at most, one stubborn bush on a cliff.
