Final Fantasy X Celestial Weapons Guide: Every Character's Ultimate Weapon
Where to find every Celestial Weapon in Final Fantasy X, plus each crest and sigil, the mirror quest, and how Break Damage Limit works.
The seven Celestial Weapons are the best gear in Final Fantasy X, and every one of them comes with a catch. You can't buy them, no boss drops them, and a few sit behind minigames that will test your patience way more than your stats. The payoff is real, though. A fully powered weapon hits for up to 99,999, ignores enemy Defense, and stacks four top abilities on a single stick.
The whole set follows the same three-step shape. Find the weapon, feed it its crest, then feed it its sigil at a big crystal in Macalania Woods. The trouble is that "find the weapon" can mean anything from typing a password to winning a chocobo race with a negative time. It all starts with one mirror.
Locating Every Celestial Mirror Piece
Every weapon chest and glyph in Spira stays sealed until you're carrying the Celestial Mirror, so this comes before anything else. The mirror starts life as the Cloudy Mirror out at Remiem Temple.
Rent a chocobo in the Calm Lands and ride to the southeast edge. There's a yellow chocobo feather on the ground - examine it from the saddle and your bird hops down to a lower trail that winds over to the temple.
Read the race slate next to the champion chocobo on the west side, then talk to the bird on the east to start the race down the platform maze. Beat the champion to the bottom and the first win pays out the Cloudy Mirror. Chests and poles don't matter for that first victory, so just get down clean.
The Cloudy Mirror won't open anything yet. Take it to Macalania Woods - South and talk to the woman and boy near the save sphere. Dad has drifted off to the old campsite deeper in the woods, so go fetch him. When you get back, the couple has noticed their son ran off toward the shining path.
From the save sphere in Macalania Woods - Central, take the crystal path heading north and use the first branch at the fork. The kid is standing next to a big glowing crystal. Examine it with the Cloudy Mirror in hand and it becomes the Celestial Mirror.
Remember that crystal - it's the only upgrade bench in the game, and every crest and sigil gets applied right here, crest before sigil. A fresh Celestial Weapon carries nothing but No AP, which makes it actively bad for leveling. The crest adds Double Overdrive but keeps No AP; the sigil wipes that off and slots in the full loadout.
Character Specific Trial Requirements
Each character needs three things: the weapon, its crest, and its sigil. Here's the whole checklist at a glance.
| Character | Weapon | Crest spot | Sigil task | |---|---|---|---| | Tidus | Caladbolg | Zanarkand, after Yunalesca | Catcher Chocobo at 0:00.0 | | Yuna | Nirvana | Besaid beach cove | Beat all 8 Belgemine duels | | Wakka | World Champion | Aurochs locker room, Luca | Win a league after all his reels | | Lulu | Onion Knight | Farplane, Guadosalam | Dodge 200 bolts in a row | | Kimahri | Spirit Lance | Mt. Gagazet - Prominence | Clear both butterfly courses | | Auron | Masamune | Mi'ihen Oldroad, south | Unlock 10 arena conquests | | Rikku | Godhand | Sanubia Desert, west pit | Finish the 10-Cactuar hunt |
Tidus: Caladbolg
Work through the chocobo trainer's exercises in the northwest Calm Lands. The fourth, Catcher Chocobo, is a race against her down the slope. Beat her once and the guard at the slope walks off. Slide down and mirror the glyph at the bottom for the Caladbolg.
The Sun Crest is sneaky. Right after the Yunalesca fight, climb the stairs at the back of the chamber and a chest appears. Grab it before leaving - in the International and HD versions Dark Bahamut moves into that room later, and he is not asking to see your mirror. It's the one time-sensitive pickup in the set.
The Sun Sigil comes from that same race, and here's the famous part: you need a displayed time of 0:00.0. Every balloon you touch takes 3 seconds off, and every bird that clips you adds a penalty plus a stun. Stay ahead of the trainer, vacuum up balloons early where the course is calm, and dodge through the bird gauntlet near the end instead of getting greedy.
Fully powered, the Caladbolg carries Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, Evade & Counter, and Magic Counter. Its damage scales with Tidus's current HP: full bar, full power.
Yuna: Nirvana
Buy Capture weapons from the Monster Arena owner and catch one of every fiend species in the Calm Lands - the kill has to come from whoever's holding the Capture weapon. Complete the set and a reward chest appears outside the arena. Mirror it open for the Nirvana.
The Moon Crest is on Besaid Island's beach, in a small cove you swim over to. Grab it on your first visit; it keeps fine in key items until the rest shows up.
The Moon Sigil means beating all eight of Belgemine's aeon duels at Remiem Temple. The early duels are practically free; the tail end expects you to own Yojimbo, Anima, and the Magus Sisters first. The Magus Sisters' chamber takes two items to open: the Flower Scepter, which Belgemine hands over partway up her duel chain, and the Blossom Crown, which the arena owner trades for catching every fiend on Mt. Gagazet. Beat her final trio, send her to the Farplane, and the sigil is yours.
Nirvana ends up with Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, Double AP, and One MP Cost, and it scales off Yuna's MP. The crest alone also lets Valefor punch past 9,999 damage, sigil or no sigil.
Wakka: World Champion
Place at least third in a blitzball tournament - exhibitions don't count - then talk to the bartender at the Luca cafe. She'll ask to see the Celestial Mirror and hand over the World Champion. Five league or tournament wins count too.
The Jupiter Crest is in the farthest locker of the Aurochs' locker room at Luca stadium, yours any time after the story tournament.
The Jupiter Sigil is the long one. Wakka starts with Element Reels; his Attack Reels, Status Reels, and Aurochs Reels come as league and tournament prizes first, roughly in that order. Once he knows all three, the sigil becomes eligible as a league first-place prize. Prize lists shuffle, so check what the league is offering before you grind ten games for a box of Mega-Potions.
Fully built, World Champion has Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, Double AP, and Evade & Counter, scales off Wakka's HP, and its crest lets Ifrit break the damage limit.
Lulu: Onion Knight
Fly back to Baaj Temple, beat Geosgaeno in the flooded hall, then dive at the south end between the pillars and search along the bottom for the hidden chest. Open it with the mirror for the Onion Knight. (Baaj is also where Anima lives, if you haven't collected her yet.)
The Venus Crest sits on the Farplane in Guadosalam - it shows up on a return visit, so pop in whenever you're passing.
Then there's the Venus Sigil: dodge 200 lightning bolts in a row in the Thunder Plains. Consecutive is the killer - leave the plains, reload a save, or board the airship, and the counter resets to zero. Hit dodge the instant the screen flashes white, before the thunder lands, and park where strikes come in fast so you're not waiting around. The game never shows your count, so tally it on paper or your phone. The reward chest appears outside the travel agency once you cross 200.
Onion Knight finishes with Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, Magic Booster, and One MP Cost, and it scales off Lulu's MP. Magic Booster pumps spell damage up by half but doubles the MP cost - stacked on One MP Cost, that's 2 MP a cast. The crest also unlocks Shiva's break damage limit.
Kimahri: Spirit Lance
The Spirit Lance hides behind the Qactuar stones. Pray at any three glowing stones in the Thunder Plains (same button you press to recruit blitzball players), and a ghostly Qactuar appears near the southern save sphere. Follow it to a broken lightning tower along the east wall, pray there too, and a chest pops out. Mirror, done.
The Saturn Crest is at Mt. Gagazet - Prominence, tucked behind one of the pillars past the Seymour Flux fight area.
The Saturn Sigil is the butterfly hunt in Macalania Woods. Touch the rainbow-colored butterfly in the north part of the woods to start it, then tag every blue butterfly on a course before the timer dies without bumping a red - reds drag you into a fiend fight and eat your clock. The sigil only comes from the tougher version of both courses that goes live once you have the airship. One course pays a Teleport Sphere and the other pays the sigil, so you're clearing both either way.
The Spirit Lance ends up with Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, Double AP, and Evade & Counter, scales off Kimahri's HP, and its crest lets Ixion break 9,999.
Auron: Masamune
Grab the Rusty Sword from the side path at the Calm Lands gorge bottom, near the Cavern of the Stolen Fayth entrance. On Mushroom Rock Road, take the western fork toward the Precipice, ride the lift up, and present the sword at the statue of Lord Mi'ihen. A glyph appears nearby - examine it with the Celestial Mirror and the Masamune is yours.
The Mars Crest sits at the dead end of the Mi'ihen Oldroad - South, below the cliff the Chocobo Eater can shove you off.
The Mars Sigil comes from the arena owner once you've unlocked ten conquest creations, in any mix of Area and Species types. A full region's collection unlocks an Area Conquest monster, and catching enough of certain fiend families unlocks the Species ones, so the species route is usually faster than completing ten entire regions. Either way, this is a "play the arena a lot" sigil rather than a minigame one.
Masamune fully powered carries Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, First Strike, and Counterattack. It's the weird one on scaling: Auron hits harder as his HP drops. Keep him beaten half to death and he's a monster. The crest also hands Yojimbo his break damage limit.
Rikku: Godhand
Easiest weapon in the set. On the airship, input the password GODHAND, and a new Mushroom Rock destination appears on the map. Walk to the end of the path and use the mirror on the glyph there.
The Mercury Crest is in a sand pit in the west part of the Sanubia Desert, and you can snatch it during the story run toward Home - no airship needed.
The Mercury Sigil means finishing the Village of the Cactuars. With the airship, examine the big Cactuar stone in Sanubia Desert - West, up on the ledge overlooking the sandstorm. It hands out clues to ten cactuars hidden around the desert. Each one plays like red light, green light: move while its back is turned, freeze when it faces you, and tag it before it bolts. Find all ten and the sandstorm over the village drops. The first chest inside holds the sigil no matter how clumsy your chases were.
Godhand maxes out with Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, Double AP, and Gillionaire, and it scales off Rikku's HP. Gillionaire doubles battle gil, which stays handy long after the combat gets easy.
A quick naming note: the HD remaster renames five of the seven crest and sigil pairs. Wakka's set is called Mercury there, Lulu's is Mars, Kimahri's is Jupiter, Auron's is Saturn, and Rikku's is Venus. Sun and Moon never change. Follow the character, not the planet, and no version can trip you up.
Farming Materials for Upgrades
Crests and sigils are the real materials here - no shop sells them, and each one is welded to a single task. So the farming game is really about setting those tasks up so they pay out twice.
The arena is the big example. One capture sweep through the Calm Lands gets you the Nirvana; extending it across every other region feeds the Mars Sigil, the Blossom Crown, and a stream of gil and spheres off the conquest monsters you unlock along the way. Buy Capture weapons for your main three before starting, keep them equipped on whoever lands kills, and sweep one region at a time so nothing drags.
So which grind is the meanest? Ask ten players and you'll get a split between the birds and the bolts, with the blitzball season close behind. All three reward a plan over brute force. In the race, bank balloons on the calm opening stretch, and if the trainer passes you mid-course with the birds out, take the reset - a salvaged run is usually a lost one.
Blitzball goes smoother if you let the seasons come to you. Win the reels as their prizes pop up, then check each new league's prize list before committing. Resetting blitzball data reshuffles prizes but wipes your progress, so look before you touch that menu option.
The butterfly courses reward restarts, since clipping a red costs a fight plus travel time. And if you flinch into a bolt at 190, take a breath before starting the count over - rushed dodges are how streaks die.
And if you'd rather skip a celestial weapon entirely, Dark Matter is the bypass: 60 of them customize Break Damage Limit onto any weapon, and 99 put Ribbon on armor. Arena conquest creations drop it about one fight in eight - slow, but available early. The Dark Aeons drop it seven out of eight, and Dark Yojimbo takes five wins to stay down, so you can farm him four kills at a time and repeat. A Dark Matter can even be thrown as an item for roughly 12,750 damage to everything on screen, one of the few ways past 9,999 with no Break Damage Limit at all.
One leveling note: don't grind in a weapon that still says No AP. Toss crests and sigils on the moment you get them - the Double AP on several finished weapons, Godhand included, makes them good leveling sticks, not just trophies.
Break Damage Limit Explained
The base game caps every hit - attacks, black magic, overdrives, all of it - at 9,999 damage. Break Damage Limit, usually shortened to BDL, pushes that ceiling to 99,999. Against story bosses the cap rarely matters. Against the Monster Arena creations and the International and HD superbosses (the Dark Aeons and Penance), it's the difference between a fight and a siege.
Two ways to get it: a fully powered Celestial Weapon has BDL baked in as one of its four abilities, or you can customize it onto anything with an open slot for 60 Dark Matter. The celestial route is way better, and not just because it's free - customized sticks don't get the celestial-only perks.
Those perks are real. Physical attacks with a Celestial Weapon skip the target's Defense stat entirely, so their damage holds up against heavily armored endgame fiends that blunt normal weapons. Each one also scales off its wielder's condition: most hit for their full amount at max HP or MP and slide down toward roughly a tenth of that as the stat drains. Masamune flips the rule - Auron hits hardest when he's hurting - which pairs nicely with Counterattack punishing everything that touches him.
BDL reaches the aeons too, and that surprises people. Power up the right weapon with just its crest - no sigil needed - and its linked aeon breaks 9,999 as well: Nirvana unlocks Valefor, World Champion unlocks Ifrit, Spirit Lance unlocks Ixion, Onion Knight unlocks Shiva, and Masamune unlocks Yojimbo. Bahamut, Anima, and the Magus Sisters come with the ability built in. If you summon a lot, throwing the crest on Yuna's weapon early is one of the best cheap power moves in the endgame.
One last thing: Break HP Limit is a different ability, it lives on armor, and it costs its own rare-item pile. Weapons carry the damage breaking, armor carries the health breaking. Don't mix up which half you're shopping for.
Order of Efficient Collection
Some pickups are free during the story, a big middle chunk unlocks with the airship, and the pain minigames can wait for better stats. A sensible order:
- Story pickups: swim to the Besaid beach cove for the Moon Crest on day one, detour onto the Mi'ihen Oldroad south for the Mars Crest, and grab the Mercury Crest from Sanubia's west sand pit on the run toward Home.
- Calm Lands: race at Remiem for the Cloudy Mirror, then do the Macalania family reunion for the Celestial Mirror. Beat the trainer once at Catcher Chocobo and claim the Caladbolg on the spot.
- Zanarkand: after Yunalesca falls, take the back stairs immediately and pocket the Sun Crest. Dark Bahamut squats on that room in later versions.
- Airship sweep: GODHAND for the Godhand, Baaj for the Onion Knight, the Thunder Plains stones for the Spirit Lance, the Farplane for the Venus Crest, the Aurochs locker for the Jupiter Crest, and one tournament for the World Champion.
- Arena block: capture sweeps region by region. This pays out the Nirvana, the Blossom Crown, the Mars Sigil, and a pile of gil and spheres along the way.
- Belgemine block: fight up her duel chain once your aeons are assembled, ending with the Magus Sisters and the Moon Sigil.
- The four walls, in whatever order you hate least: butterflies for the Saturn Sigil, 200 bolts for the Venus Sigil, the league grind for the Jupiter Sigil, and the 0:00.0 race for the Sun Sigil.
This order lets the arena and Remiem work double as stat farming for the minigame gauntlet, and nothing ends up locked behind a chest you walked past. Collecting all seven pops the Weapon Master trophy in the HD versions, too.
And one more time, because it's the only pickup with real teeth: the Sun Crest comes off those back stairs before you leave the dome. Everything else will wait for you. That one would rather not.
