
ARK: Survival Ascended Breeding Guide: Stats, Mutations, and Imprinting
How ARK: Survival Ascended breeding really works, covering wild stat inheritance, egg incubation, mutation stacking, and imprinting bonuses.
Breeding is the whole endgame of ARK: Survival Ascended once you're tired of the tame-grind. A tamed Rex gets you through the day. A bred, mutated, fully imprinted Rex walks through boss fights like they're a warm-up. The catch is that the system is pretty opaque - the game never explains wild points, mutation counters, or imprint math, and a lot of players burn weeks doing it wrong.
Here's the full picture, from reading dino stats to running a mutation line that actually goes somewhere.
Understanding Base Stats vs Bred Stats
Every tame in ARK has a hidden pile of "wild points" spread across its stats. A wild level 150 Rex on official has 149 points split between Health, Stamina, Oxygen, Food, Weight, and Melee. Those points were assigned randomly when it spawned. That's why two level 150 Rexes can be wildly different - one might have 40 points in Health and 5 in Melee, the other the reverse.
When you tame that Rex, the taming effectiveness bonus adds extra wild points on top, which is why a perfect-tame level 150 comes out around level 224. Then you can pump it with XP for up to 88 more domestic levels on official. Those XP levels are the ones you spend yourself.
Breeding only passes on the wild points. A baby is born with a fresh roll of each stat taken from one parent or the other, and nothing else. The taming bonus is gone, the parent's XP levels are gone. That matters a lot: your level 300 battle Rex that you've leveled for months might breed a level 180 baby, because only the wild points count.
How inheritance actually rolls
For each stat, the baby picks one parent's value. The stronger parent's stat wins 55% of the time, the weaker one 45%. So if Dad has 40 points in Health and Mom has 12, the baby gets the 40 more often than not, but you'll still see plenty of babies rolling the bad one.
One ASA-specific wrinkle: in Ascended, the wild points and the mutated points in a stat travel together. In Survival Evolved you could sometimes inherit the high wild value with the low mutation value on the same stat. Here you can't. The game hands you one parent's version of that stat, whole.
Why bred beats tamed over time
A single tame is one random roll. Breeding lets you cherry-pick the best roll from each stat and weld them into one animal. Tame twenty Rexes, find the best Health point value, the best Melee, the best Weight, and breed until one baby inherits all of them at once. That combined animal is your foundation, and it's usually better than anything you'll ever catch in the wild, because wild spawns rarely dump 40+ points into more than one stat.
Two quick rules that save people a lot of grief:
- The baby's level at birth equals its total wild points plus one. If both parents are level 224 with identical stats, a baby that rolls every strong stat comes out at 224 too. A random mismatch comes out lower. A mutation comes out higher.
- Keep a spreadsheet, or use a tool like ARK Smart Breeding. Trying to remember which female carries the 41-point Health line in your head does not survive contact with forty dinos.
Reading the numbers in game
Open a tame's inventory and hover a stat. ASA shows the post-tame value with the base value in brackets, and the tooltip tells you how many wild points are in it. That bracket number is the one breeding cares about. If someone's selling you a "level 350 breeder male," the level is nearly meaningless on its own - ask for the point breakdown per stat, because a 350 with 30 points in everything is worth less for breeding than a 230 with 45 in Health and 45 in Melee.
Setting Up an Egg Incubation Chamber
Mating is the easy part. Enable wandering on a male and female of the same species, keep them close, and they'll handle the rest. Most species have a mating cooldown somewhere between 18 and 48 hours, and the female drops a fertilized egg (mammals just get pregnant).
The egg is where new players lose everything. A fertilized egg must sit on the ground or a floor at the right temperature. Too hot or too cold and it starts losing health until it dies, sometimes in minutes for a species with a narrow range.
Every species has its own band. Some common ones, confirmed on the community wiki:

Notice how tight some of those are. Argentavis has a 1.5 degree window. Giganotosaurus has one degree. You are not hitting that with campfires.
Temperature control options
- Air Conditioners. The old standard. Powered by a generator, each one pushes the room toward its target. Stack several for a wide combined range - a wall of ACs covers everything from Dimetrodon to Wyvern eggs. They heat and cool, which matters if you breed cold-weather species.
- Dimetrodons. A tamed Dimetrodon with melee levels gives off heat, and stacking a few covers most mid-temperature eggs. Free to run, no power grid, kind of a pain to position.
- Egg Incubator. The best option by a mile. Unlocks at level 89 for 55 engram points, crafted in a Fabricator from 500 metal ingots, 350 polymer, 200 crystal, 100 cementing paste, and 250 electronics. One unit holds 10 eggs, and you dial in the exact temperature with a wheel menu instead of guessing.
Why the incubator is worth the tech
The incubator doesn't just hold temperature. In ASA it shows you what's inside each egg before it hatches - the sex, the color regions, and the stat levels. That changes breeding entirely. You can see that slot 4 is a female with a fresh Health mutation while it's still an egg, and destroy the eight duds next to it without ever hatching them, feeding them, or finding space for them.
For a mutation operation running dozens of eggs a day, that's the difference between a manageable project and a dino jail.
A few incubation habits worth building:
- Pick the egg up to pause it. Incubation progress saves, and a refrigerator keeps a fertilized egg viable pretty much indefinitely. Batch your hatches so babies arrive when you're actually online.
- If you're incubating on the floor without a machine, drop the egg and watch the health bar. Health ticking down means the temp is wrong. "Too cold" or "too hot" text appears in the egg's HUD.
- Hatch inside a sealed room. An egg sitting in the open on The Island at night can slip out of range even with ACs running, and wild dinos will absolutely eat a fertilized egg off the ground.
Triggering and Stacking Mutations
Mutations are the engine of the whole system. When a baby is conceived, the game runs three hidden mutation checks. Each check has a 2.5% chance to fire, which works out to about a 7.31% chance of at least one mutation per egg when both parents are eligible. A successful mutation adds 2 wild levels to one random stat, plus a color change on one region of the baby.
Those two levels are permanent and breed onward like any other wild point. Stack enough of them on Melee and you get a Rex that bites for absurd numbers.
The 20 counter wall
Every creature has two mutation counters, matrilineal and patrilineal, visible on the Ancestry tab. The check that matters is each parent's combined total. If both parents sit under 20 combined, you get the full 7.31% chance. If one parent is over 20, the odds drop hard - roughly to 3.3% or 4.1% depending on whether the over-20 parent carries the stronger stat. If both parents are over 20, mutations stop completely.
The classic exploit around this: only the female's counter matters for keeping the odds alive. Run one mutated stud male (his counter will blow past 20 almost immediately) against a pen of clean, zero-mutation females. He passes his high stats, the females keep the mutation rolls coming, and you keep breeding females with a clean counter whenever you need to reset.
The counter is inherited as a sum. A baby's matrilineal number is its mother's two counters added together, patrilineal is its father's. That's why counters climb fast and why "20/20" on the Ancestry page doesn't mean the animal itself has 20 real mutations - it means the lineage carries at least that many.
The stat roll, step by step
Here's what actually happens on each of those three checks:
- The game picks a stat that the species can level. For most dinos that's six options; Baryonyx and a few others have no Oxygen, so five.
- It picks a parent as the mutation source, weighted 55/45 toward whichever parent holds the stronger value in that stat.
- If the source parent's combined counter is 20 or higher, the check just dies there.
- Otherwise it rolls the 2.5%. Success means +2 levels to that stat and a random color mutation.
The color side effect is where pretty dinos come from. About 90% of the time you get a normal color, and around 10% of the time the game hands you a dye color, which is the only legit way to get some of those shades. Color is pure cosmetics - it doesn't touch stats.
One dead end to know about: a mutation that lands on movement speed does basically nothing for most creatures, since wild speed points don't increase speed. It burns the counter anyway. Just shrug and keep going.
Stacking one stat at a time
Trying to mutate Health and Melee at once feels twice as fast and is actually slower for most setups. The standard approach is a separated line:
- Pick one stat. Say Health on a Rex.
- Build a pen of identical-stat, zero-mutation females and one male.
- Hatch eggs until a baby comes out 2 levels above the parents with higher Health than the stud. That's your new mutation.
- If it's male, swap him in as the new stud. If it's female, breed her back to a clean male until you get a male that keeps her mutated Health, then swap that in.
- Repeat until you can't stand it.
The math on this is brutal and worth internalizing. Per egg, the chance of getting a usable baby - new Health mutation that also keeps the current stud's Health - is about 0.67%, or roughly 1 in 150 eggs. Only about half of those winners are male. So one step up the ladder costs something like 200-300 eggs on average, which is why serious mutation lines run 20+ females and a hatchery running nonstop.
Two hard limits to plan around. On official servers a creature can't level past 450 (500 for X and R variants), and you want to stop well short of that - around 362 - so you have room for the 88 XP levels a tame can still earn. And a single stat locks up at 255 mutated points, so the practical stopping point on any one stat is around 253 or 254. For singleplayer and most unofficial servers the overall cap doesn't exist, and only the 255-per-stat rule applies.
Once you've got a deep Health line and a deep Melee line going separately, you breed them together at the end. Merging two finished lines is a few dozen eggs of waiting for the right inheritance rolls, which is nothing next to the thousands you spent mutating.
Imprinting Timers and Bonus Rewards
Imprinting is the payoff for all that babysitting. During maturation a baby periodically asks for care, and each care session builds a permanent imprint percentage.
The requests cycle on a timer - about 8 hours between them on official settings - and come in three flavors:
- Cuddle. Walk up and press the use key. Free.
- Walk. Whistle follow and walk roughly 0-20 foundations in a straight line away from the baby. Walking in circles doesn't count. Procoptodon trick: if the baby is riding in a kangaroo pouch, moving the Procoptodon counts.
- Food. It wants one specific item in your last inventory slot. Carnivores ask for berries sometimes, herbivores ask for meat, and it can be kibble of any tier. Always keep a stock of the common kibble types near your nursery.
Miss a care window and nothing bad happens - you just don't get that slice. Imprint progress doesn't decay. But you can't get it back either, so a missed cuddle is a permanently weaker dino.
How much imprint per cuddle
The gain per session is tied to how long the species takes to mature: roughly 8 hours divided by total maturation time. Fast-maturing dinos give big chunks per cuddle. Slow ones give crumbs but ask many more times.

So a Rex on official rates needs about 11 care sessions spread across its 3 day 20 hour maturation, one every 8 hours. That means setting an alarm or living near the nursery. A Giga needs around 25 sessions across ten days. People have lost sleep over less.
Two tools that help. A Sanguine Elixir, crafted on a Desmodus saddle from 200 blood packs, gives one baby a flat 30% imprint boost once, and it works at any point before maturity. And a tamed Gigantoraptor's Baby Call can reroll what a baby is asking for, which saves you when it demands extraordinary kibble at 3 a.m. and you have none.
Cryopodding a baby pauses both the maturation and imprint timers, which is handy for stepping away - though it no longer rerolls the care request in ASA like it used to in Evolved.
What 100% actually gives you
At full imprint the creature gets a 20% boost to its stat values - Health, Food, Weight, Melee, speed, torpor (stamina, oxygen, and crafting skill don't get it). That bonus applies to the base stat multiplicatively, so on big-health animals it's a huge chunk of effective HP. On top of that, the player who did the imprinting gets a 30% damage increase and a 30% damage reduction while riding it.
Run the numbers on a Rex with 150% base melee: 100% imprint takes it to 180%. Riding it yourself as the imprinter takes that to 234%. Multiply the health gain, the damage gain, and the incoming-damage cut together and a fully imprinted, rider-owned dino is worth around 2.67 times an unimprinted one in a fight. That's not a nice-to-have. That's the entire reason to imprint boss dinos.
A few details people get wrong:
- The stat portion applies no matter who owns or rides the animal once it's grown. The 30% rider bonus only fires for the specific player who did the imprinting. Selling a 100% imprinted dino still sells the stat boost.
- Partial imprint pays out proportionally. 50% imprint gives +10% stats and +15% rider bonuses.
- The imprint bonus does not pass to offspring. Every baby needs its own full imprint run.
- By default only the player who claimed the baby can imprint it. On a tribe project, decide who's claiming before anyone touches it.
Building a Stat-Optimized Breeding Line
Everything above rolls into one workflow. Here's the shape of a serious operation, start to finish.
Phase 1: Build the foundation
Go catch a pile of high-level wilds - level 130 to 150 males and females, or the max your map spawns. Perfect-tame them with kibble to protect effectiveness. Then read the point breakdown on every one and note the best value you found per stat.
Breed across them until a baby inherits your best Health, best Melee, and best Weight in one animal. On official, you also want that foundation to carry near-zero points in Oxygen, Food, and Speed, because the level 450 cap punishes every wasted point. Taming some very low level wilds and breeding their zero-stat rolls in is tedious, but it buys headroom later.
Don't start mutating until the foundation is clean. Mutating a mediocre stat and fixing it later is possible in ASA - wild and mutated points both transfer - but it's cleaner to nail it now.
Phase 2: Build the machine
Set up the physical plant before you scale up:
- A row of Egg Incubators near a generator, each set to your species' temperature band. Ten slots per unit, dial-a-temp, stats preview. Two units handle a 20-female operation comfortably.
- A breeding pen with your stud male and your clean females, on cryo or in a separate pen when not mating. Females go on cooldown 18-48 hours after laying.
- A nursery with feeding troughs, or better, a Maewing on nursing duty. Load the Maewing with the right food for the species, turn on nursing from the radial menu, and it acts as a trough for every baby in range. Level its nursing stat to widen the range. Watch that babies actually show the feeding icon - a baby outside nursing range starves quietly.
- Room to grow them out. A baby stage Rex runs about 9 hours before it hits juvenile and can eat from troughs on its own.
Phase 3: Run the loop
Pick your target stat and grind. Eggs go in the incubator, read them before hatching, keep only the ones with a new mutation in the target stat, destroy the rest. Male winners replace the stud. Female winners get bred back to a clean male until you pull the mutation into a male.
Track everything in a spreadsheet or ARK Smart Breeding: which female, which generation, what point value, what counter. Memory fails around generation four, and every mixup costs hundreds of eggs.
Set a stopping point before you start. On official, aim to finish around level 362 so you can spend the full 88 XP levels without hitting the 450 wall, and stop any single stat around 253 points. If you're on a server with boosted rates, the cap conversation changes - check your server's settings before you plan a 450 project, because some unofficial setups make that number unreachable or meaningless.
Phase 4: Merge and imprint
Breed your finished Health line against your finished Melee line until a baby inherits both. That baby is your final product's parent. Every animal you actually intend to ride or fight gets a full imprint run from the person who'll be on its back - 20% stats for anyone, plus the 30/30 rider bonus for the imprinter.
For boss teams specifically, imprint everything. An unimprinted mutated Rex is still a good Rex, but you're leaving more than two and a half times its combat value on the table by skipping the cuddle timers.
The whole pipeline runs on patience more than skill. A foundation pair takes a few days to assemble, the first ten Health mutations take weeks at official rates, and the imprint grind never stops being a chore. But the animal waiting at the end of it - deep health, stacked melee, 100% imprint, your name on the rider bonus - is stronger than anything that spawns in the wild, and nobody can take the line away from you once it's built.
