A walkthrough of ARK: Survival Ascended building materials, snapping, raid-proof layouts, storage placement, and how to upgrade a base in place.
A base in ARK: Survival Ascended does two jobs at once. It keeps the local wildlife off your stuff, and on a PvP server it also has to make raiding you more trouble than it's worth. Most bases that get flattened don't fail because the owner picked bad materials. They fail because the walls went in the wrong spots, the vault sat against an outside wall, and upgrading meant tearing the whole place down.
The good news is that Ascended's building system is way friendlier than the old game. Snapping got smarter, picking pieces back up no longer nukes everything attached to them, and swapping a wall to a stronger tier takes one click. Here's how the tiers actually compare, how to get foundations to behave on ugly terrain, and how to lay out a base that costs a raider more than they'll steal.
Thatch vs Wood vs Stone vs Metal Walls
Every wall tier has two things people care about: raw health, and what's even allowed to damage it. The second one matters way more, and it's the part the item card doesn't spell out.

The part that surprises people
Read that health column again. Wood, stone, and metal walls all sit at 10,000 HP, and foundations follow the same pattern, with 2,400 for thatch and 15,000 for the other three. Stone isn't a bigger wall than wood. It's the same wall that shrugs off nearly everything short of explosives and proper tools.
So the real progression check is damage:
- Thatch takes damage from basically everything. A lone raptor chews through it, and so does a bored player with fists.
- Wood blocks a long list of creatures outright. Raptors, sabertooths, direwolves, dilos, terror birds, and thylacoleos can't scratch it at all. Metal tools and explosives still get through, just slowly.
- Stone is where most PvE threats get locked out. Metal weapons hit it for 5% of their damage, ballista bolts for 40%, cannonballs around 137%, and explosives for 150%. A few oddballs like Arthropluera and Chalicotherium can also work on it.
- Metal only takes damage from explosives, tek weapons, a Titanosaur, bosses, and Arthropluera. No tool in the game picks a hole in it. That's the entire appeal.
That's why the standard advice is to rush stone and treat wood as a one-night material. Wood stops the raptor problem. Stone stops the "someone with a metal hatchet walked by" problem.
What raiders need for each tier
Explosives are the language of PvP, so here's the exchange rate per wall, from the ASA raid calculators:

Two things jump out of that table. Stone walls pop to a single C4 exactly like wood does, so on a PvP server stone is a speed bump rather than a defense. And metal roughly triples the bill per hole, which is the whole point of the tier. Someone carrying six C4 can open six stone walls or two metal ones, and that math drives everything in the layout section below.
Grenades look cheap until you count them out. Forty-three grenades for one metal wall is a full loot run of gunpowder and flint. Cannonballs are the budget answer to stone, since three of them open a wall and the ammo costs a fraction of what C4 runs. That's why you see cannon-toting raiders sniffing around stone boxes.
Cost, and when to skip a tier
Metal walls run 25 metal ingots and 7 cementing paste each, and you can only craft them at a smithy or a couple of creature saddles. A modest shell with a 6x6 footprint and two wall heights is past 40 walls, so call it a thousand-plus ingots before you count foundations and ceilings. Paste is usually the bottleneck. Seven per wall adds up fast, and farming beaver dams or chitin gets old in a hurry.
The usual path on a fresh server: thatch for night one, wood by day two or three, stone as soon as you hit level 24 and have a metal pick for serious stone farming. Metal waits until you've got an anky, a refining forge, and a steady paste source. Jumping straight from wood to metal is possible, but it eats your whole week, and a finished stone shell protects you better in the meantime than half a metal base ever will.
Decay timers
Structures rot when nobody from the tribe logs in. Thatch gives up after about 4 days, wood 8, stone 12, metal 16. Logging in resets the clock. If you're going to be away for a while, build the important bits out of the longest-lasting tier you can afford, and remember that your tames and crops have hunger problems a wall material won't solve.
Foundation Snapping and Terrain Tricks
Foundations are the one part of a build worth genuinely sweating over. Everything above them can be picked up and moved later. A foundation grid that fights the ground shape leaves you with crooked walls, and crooked walls leave gaps.
Placing the first one
Scout the flattest patch you can find before you commit to anything. Drop the first foundation on the low end of your intended footprint, not the high end. Starting low means the rest of the pad can step up with extra foundations where the ground rises, and stepping up looks and behaves better than foundations hanging in the air on the downhill side.
After that first piece, the rest snap along it edge to edge, and each new tile tries to match its neighbor's height. Gentle slopes give you a small ledge every tile or two. Anything steeper and you've got options:
- Pillars. Place a ceiling where you want the floor, then drop pillars underneath down to solid ground. This is how people build into cliff faces and over water, and it's honestly less work than flattening a hillside by hand.
- Stacked foundations. On a mild slope you can drop a second foundation half-buried beside the first. Costs materials, but a flat top for the main room is worth it.
- Just move. Ten steps sideways is sometimes the entire fix. Fighting terrain is the number one cause of janky bases.
How support reach works
A wall supports ceilings up to two tiles out in any direction, and one tile diagonally. Ceilings at the far end of that reach can't hold walls of their own. Big open rooms run straight into this, so drop a pillar every few tiles or the middle of your ceiling goes unsupported and anything you try to place there snaps red.
This bites people on roof turrets specifically. You drag a turret out to a roof corner and it refuses to place, because that corner ceiling sits at the edge of the support web. A pillar in the room below fixes it. So does moving the turret one tile inward, which is usually the cheaper answer.
Placement quirks worth knowing
The green ghost mesh in Ascended does a decent job of showing where a piece will snap before you commit. A few things make life easier:
- Pressing E while placing a wall flips it. Which side faces out matters for how doors and windows sit, and for how the build reads from outside.
- Pillars rotate and can be laid horizontally now. Running one along a ceiling edge gives you a lip that keeps players and small tames from strolling off, and it looks tidier than a railing in tight spots.
- Railings snap onto sloped pieces like ramps, stairs, and roofs, and railings chain to each other. That lets you hold a fence line level across bumpy ground instead of the usual staircase effect.
- Foundations and walls block wild spawns in a radius around them. Clearing and building a small pad actually makes the ground near your base safer, since nothing new wanders in on top of you.
The Ascended quality-of-life changes
Two big ones. First, picking up a structure no longer detonates everything attached to it. The attached pieces go straight into your inventory, so you can pull a foundation out from under a wall without losing the wall. That alone turns a redesign from a demolition project into an afternoon.
Second, no pipes and no wires. Water works off a stone or metal intake with a radius, and anything in range counts as irrigated. Water tanks extend that radius and tanks chain off each other, so you can push water a long way uphill from a river. Power works the same way, except a generator's radius can't be extended at all, so a big base needs one generator per section. Plan rooms around a generator each instead of trying to stretch one across the whole build.
Defensible Base Layouts Against Raids
PvP base design is mostly a math problem. Every hole a raider has to blow costs them explosives, and every layer you add multiplies their bill. Nothing is unraidable. The goal is to cost more than the loot is worth, so the guy with six C4 picks your neighbor instead of you.
Layers beat one thick wall
A single metal wall costs a raider 3 C4. A vault sitting behind one wall is fine for a quiet week, but anyone serious walks through that. The standard answer is a honeycomb: a grid of small cells where walls are shared between rooms, and there's no straight line from outside to your loot.
Picture a 3x3 grid with the vaults in the middle cell. Reaching the center from any side means breaking an outer wall, then an inner wall, then a third wall, and each of those is metal. Call it 9 C4 before they're even standing next to your storage, then 15 more to crack a single vault. Twenty-four charges for one room of loot is a serious commitment, and most raiders do that math before they plant the first bomb.
Empty cells still pull their weight. Leave them bare or fill them with junk boxes, so someone who blows in finds disappointment half the time. The walls are doing the work either way.
Where the vaults go
Center of the base, always, and never tight against an outside wall. A vault hard up on the exterior can eat splash from a bomb meant for the wall next to it, and experienced raiders look for exactly that. Same goes for refrigerators and anything with a footprint that pushes into the wall line.
Keep the vault room small and tall rather than wide. A 2x2 room three walls high fits four or five vaults with walkway to spare, and every extra tile of floor is another stretch of outer wall to defend.
Doors and windows
Windowframes on the ground floor are basically raid doors. They're holes in your shell that let people see the layout and shoot inside, and the frame itself is no tougher than the wall it replaced. Skip them below the second story, and go easy on them above it too.
One entrance. Every extra door is another weak panel, and doors are usually the softest thing on any given wall. A behemoth gate with a regular doorframe behind it gives you a dino-sized entrance you can still slam shut, and anyone who breaks the gate still faces the inner door.
Turrets and the roof line
Auto turrets want power and height. Get them up on pillars or a tower that clears the roof line so they can't be peeked from behind cover, and space them so the arcs overlap at the doors. On a budget, a row of plant species X plots on the roof does surprisingly good work as a first layer while you save up.
Keep the outside of the base clean while you're at it. No ramps, no catwalks, no handy rock perched right at the wall that someone can jump or grapple from. Roof access is the most common way into an otherwise solid build, and it's usually the owner's fault.
Terrain picks
The best layouts start before you place a foundation. A few proven spots on The Island:
- Central Cave (around 41.5 lat, 46.9 lon). Tight corridors that are miserable to shoot into, an artifact, and rich metal nodes nearby. Megalosaurus show up at night, so have a plan for that.
- North West Cave (around 19.3 lat, 19.0 lon). The narrowest cave on the map, and most big mounts can't fit inside at all.
- Lava Cave (around 70.6 lat, 86.1 lon). Isolated, hot, and quiet. Bring white crystals for the heat.
- Blue Obelisk area (around 25.4 lat, 25.6 lon). Dense resources on Whitesky Peak, but expect neighbors and regular visitors.
One big warning on caves. Structures inside them take six times damage from all explosives. That sounds like a defense bonus and it's the opposite, since your cave walls pop to bombs six times faster than the same walls outside. Caves trade raw wall strength for tight corridors and entrance control. Know which one you're buying before you commit a vault room to a cave back corner.
The offline problem
Most raids happen while you're asleep. Log out in the middle of the base rather than a perimeter room, pull your best gear into vaults, and pen your tames inside the walls instead of leaving them parked loose. A base that looks expensive and annoying gets skipped a lot more often than one that looks rich and easy.
Storage and Crafting Station Placement
Storage and crafting are the parts of a base you touch a hundred times a session, so this is a quality-of-life question as much as a defense one.
The storage ladder

Neither box needs a foundation, which makes them handy for a first-day camp on the beach. Both can be pin coded too, which matters more early on than people expect.
Sort by category and keep it consistent, one box for building mats, one for tools, one for ammo, one for food. Ten minutes of sorting saves you a hundred "where's the paste" moments later, and on PvP it means you can grab the essentials and run when the alarm goes off instead of rummaging.
Where the good stuff lives
Vaults in the core, junk on the outside. The outer rooms should look boring: spare stone, seeds, replaceable gear. Anything you'd genuinely hate to lose goes deeper in.
Fridges need generator coverage, and since the radius can't be extended in Ascended, plan the kitchen and its generator as one unit. A fridge sitting just outside power range looks fine and quietly rots your whole harvest. Finding that out after a long farming run stings.
Stations in the right rooms
Cluster stations by what they eat:
- Forge room. Refining forge, smithy, fabricator. These consume metal, oil, and crystal, so park them wherever you dump mining runs. A smithy only has 1,500 HP, so keep it off the outer wall.
- Kitchen. Campfire, cooking pot, preserving bin, then fridge and industrial grill later. Near water coverage if you can manage it.
- Grow room. Crop plots under greenhouse pieces. Each greenhouse ceiling, wall, or sloped roof adds 15% greenhouse effect and the effect caps at 300%, which better than triples growth speed. You don't need an all-glass palace to hit the cap either, a stone box with greenhouse ceilings gets there with enough pieces.
- Ammo room. Close to the turrets, so reloading during a raid isn't a cross-base sprint.
The Fabricator got a nice change in Ascended. A generator in range powers it remotely, so you're not hand-feeding gasoline into the machine itself anymore. Keep the generator alive and the fab hums along.
Leave walkway around each cluster. Every station has an inventory you'll be standing at, and a room where a vault blocks the forge gets old by the second day. One tile of standing room per station is usually plenty.
Upgrading a Base Without Losing Progress
The single best building trick in the game: you don't tear anything down to upgrade it. Take a stronger piece, aim it at the spot where the old piece sits, and place. The new piece replaces the old one and you get a fraction of the old piece's materials back. Thatch to wood, wood to stone, stone to metal, and it works on foundations, walls, and ceilings alike.
That one mechanic should change how you build from day one. Lay out the shape you actually want in thatch or wood, live in it, and upgrade the shell later. The footprint survives, the walls get stronger, and you're never camping in the open mid-rebuild.
Order of operations
Go bottom-up for a full rebuild: foundations first, then pillars, then walls, then ceilings. Support flows upward in ARK, and swapping the load-bearing pieces first means nothing above ever loses its backing. Replacing a wood foundation with a stone one leaves the walls standing on it exactly where they were.
Work one face at a time on PvP, and finish whatever faces open ground before you log off. A half-upgraded base has stone on one side and wood on the other, and raiders read walls like a map.
Swap, don't demolish
Demolishing by hand returns less than the swap trick, and pieces that were attached to whatever you knocked out refund nothing at all. The swap hands back a slice of the old piece's cost and leaves every connected structure standing. For a piece you just mis-snapped two minutes ago, pick it up instead of demolishing it. Fresh placements return to your inventory at full cost for a short window right after you put them down, so a bad click costs you nothing if you catch it immediately.
Keep the old shell
When you outgrow a base, don't delete it. A spare wood or stone box out by your taming spot works as a pen, a backup respawn, and a junk drawer all at once. Spare bases spread risk too. Someone flattening your main doesn't get your breeding pairs and your paste stash in the same hour if half your operation lives two beaches away.
The cheap version of this is a 2x2 stone hut with a bed, a box of backup gear, and a campfire. It costs maybe 300 stone total, and it turns a total loss into an annoying evening.
Start the swap habit early. A stone wall costs 40 stone, 20 wood, and 15 thatch, and swapping it over a wood wall hands back part of the 40 wood you already spent on that spot. Do ten walls a night while your forge runs, and by the weekend the whole shell is stone without your base ever being open to the sky.
