Rocket League is one of those games where the default settings quietly hold you back for hundreds of hours. The stock controller layout puts your most-used buttons under one thumb, the deadzone sits loose, and nothing gets bound for directional air roll. The fix is smaller than you'd think. Almost every high-ranked player runs a predictable set of tweaks, and once you copy that baseline you can stop fighting your gear and start fixing your actual play.
Deadzone and Sensitivity Settings Explained
The deadzone is the little dead patch in the middle of your stick where the game ignores movement. Push the stick a hair and nothing happens until you cross the threshold. That threshold is the controller deadzone, measured from 0.00 to 1.00, and most competitive players run it somewhere around 0.05. The usable range lands between about 0.03 and 0.10.
Controller deadzone
A low number like 0.05 means the car reacts to the tiniest stick movement, which feels snappy and precise. Go too low, though, and your stick's natural wear starts registering as input. That's stick drift, and it'll make your car creep on its own while your hands are off the stick. If you drop the deadzone and notice the car drifting, nudge it back up a notch until the drift stops. A lot of people land on 0.05 and stay there for years.
Dodge deadzone
This one trips people up. The dodge deadzone controls when a stick movement counts as a flip instead of a plain jump. The default sits at 0.50, and plenty of players leave it there or push it up toward 0.70. A higher dodge deadzone means you have to push the stick further before a flip triggers, so you won't accidentally flip when you're trying to do a soft double jump. Pros tend to run it between 0.60 and 0.75. If you keep flipping by accident off kickoffs or while fast-aerialing, raise this number.
Sensitivity, both of them
Steering sensitivity and aerial sensitivity control how fast your car turns on the ground versus in the air. They start at 1.00. Most ranked players bump both up into the 1.30 to 1.50 range, and the standard advice is to keep the two numbers identical. Running them at different values means the car handles one way on the ground and another way in the air, and that mismatch throws off your timing.
Go low and work up. Cranking sensitivity to 1.50 on day one usually makes the car feel twitchy and hard to steer. Start around 1.20 to 1.30, get comfortable, and creep up if you feel like you're running out of turn speed on aerials.
Deadzone shape
There's also a deadzone shape setting, and the cross shape is what most pros use. It widens the ignore zone on the diagonal directions, which lines up with how the stick physically moves and cuts down on weird diagonal inputs.
Vibration
Turn controller vibration off. It feels nice for the first hour and gives you nothing after that. At higher ranks the rumble just adds noise to your hands while you're trying to make tiny adjustments.

Air Roll Binds: Left, Right, and One-Button Setups
This is the single biggest setting change most players make. Free air roll, the default, rolls your car in whatever direction you push the stick. Directional air roll left and right roll your car one way no matter where the stick points, and putting those on dedicated buttons opens up a whole class of aerial plays you basically can't do otherwise.
Why directional air roll matters
With free air roll tied to the stick, you're fighting for the same input: the stick has to both rotate the car and aim it. Directional air roll puts rotation on a button, which frees the stick to point the nose wherever you want. That's how players fly upside down, air-dribble, and recover from awkward positions without panicking. It also makes flicks and redirects far more consistent.
The default bind problem
The stock layout is the thing to fix first. Out of the box, jump, boost, and ball cam all sit under your right thumb. You can't hold boost while jumping and adjusting the camera with that setup, and at some point you need all three at once. Almost every competitive player moves boost off the face buttons onto a bumper or trigger.
A clean starting layout
A setup that works well for a lot of people:
- Boost on RB / R1
- Air roll left on LB / L1
- Air roll right on a second button (the other bumper, or a paddle if you have one)
- Powerslide and free air roll sharing one button, often L2 / LT or Square / X
- Jump on a face button, ball cam on toggle
The key idea is keeping your thumbs on the sticks. If boost and a directional air roll both sit on the shoulders, you never have to take a thumb off a stick to press them. That alone changes how aerials feel.
Left, right, or both?
A common path is to learn one direction first. Bind air roll right (or left, pick one) to a bumper and learn to fly with just that. Most players pick right because the tilt lines up with aerial shots for a lot of setups. Once one direction feels natural, add the second. A few pros run only one directional bind plus free air roll and do just fine, so you don't strictly need both. Having both does give you more options for recoveries and weird saves.
One-button setups
Some players run a tight one-button version: free air roll and powerslide on the same button, one directional air roll on a bumper, boost on the other bumper. Firstkiller, a top 1v1 player and high-level 3v3 pro, runs something close to this. He has powerslide and air roll both on Square, air roll left on R1, and boost on Circle. No claw grip, no paddles, no fancy finger gymnastics. That's proof you don't need a complicated layout to reach the top.
Ball Cam and Powerslide Configuration
Ball cam and powerslide sound boring, but they're two of the most-used buttons in the game. Powerslide especially gets pressed more than almost anything once you start playing fast, so where it lives matters.
Ball cam on toggle
Ball cam should be set to toggle, not hold. With toggle, you tap once to lock the camera on the ball and tap again to go back to free cam. The default in most versions is already toggle, and that's correct. Holding ball cam down the whole match would wreck your thumb.
Ball cam on is the view you'll use maybe 90 percent of the time. It keeps the ball centered so you can read where it's going. You turn it off for moments when you need to see the play around you: grabbing boost, rotating back, lining up a demo, or reading where your teammate is. The habit to build is flipping it off briefly for awareness, then back on for the play.
Where to put ball cam
Because it's a toggle and you only tap it here and there, ball cam doesn't need a prime button. Plenty of players leave it on a face button like Triangle or Y. If your thumbs are busy, you can move it to L3 (clicking the left stick) or a bumper. Since you're not holding it, comfort matters more than speed.
Powerslide is the most-used button
People underestimate powerslide. You use it to turn sharply, to half-flip, to wave dash, to recover, and to reposition in tight spaces. Once you're playing at any real speed, you're hitting it constantly. Most experienced players agree it's one of the most important buttons to place well.
Because powerslide and free air roll never fire at the same time (one is for driving, the other for flying), a lot of players double-bind them to the same button. That frees up a slot for a directional air roll. Common spots are L1 / LB or Square / X, anything your thumb or finger hits cleanly without leaving the sticks.
Avoiding fat-fingers
The thing to avoid is stacking powerslide on a button you also need while turning hard or jumping. If powerslide shares space with something you press mid-corner, you'll occasionally trigger the wrong action under pressure. Test your layout in free play: if you can drift, jump, and boost through a tight turn without any finger gymnastics, you're set.
Controller Versus Keyboard and Mouse Tradeoffs
You can play Rocket League on keyboard and mouse, and a small number of high-ranked players do. But the controller has real advantages that show up the moment you start needing fine control.
The stick problem
The biggest one is steering. A controller stick gives you a full 360 degrees of direction, plus analog intensity. Tilt it a little and you turn gently, tilt it all the way and you turn sharp. A keyboard gives you eight directions, and the input is either full-on or full-off. There's no gentle. For a game built on car control and tiny angle adjustments, that analog range is a real edge.
The trigger problem
Same deal with the gas and brake. Controller triggers are analog, so you can feather the throttle to creep, brake gently, or modulate speed in tiny increments. Keyboard throttle is a switch: foot to the floor or nothing. You can still drive well on keyboard, but you lose that fine throttle control, which matters for soft touches and positioning.
Where keyboard holds up
Keyboard isn't all downside. Key presses are exact, there's no stick drift ever, and if you already own a keyboard and mouse there's no extra cost. Some players also find aiming aerials with keys more repeatable once they've built the muscle memory. A handful of high-ranked players have stuck with keyboard and reached impressive ranks, so it's clearly viable if you click with it.
What most pros pick
The numbers tell the story: the overwhelming majority of pro players use a controller. The analog control just fits the game better, and most people learn faster on a pad. If you're starting fresh or you're willing to switch, a controller is the safer pick. If you've already put serious time in on keyboard and you're comfortable, there's no law saying you have to change. Comfort and familiarity count for a lot, and a setup you know beats a "better" setup you don't.
Pro Player Settings Worth Copying
Stealing a pro's settings won't make you play like them, but it gives you a known-good starting point instead of guessing. Here are a few verified setups. The deadzone and sensitivity numbers come from the players' own settings pages and trackers.
Firstkiller
Firstkiller is one of the strongest 1v1 players in the pro scene and a top 3v3 talent. He uses a DualShock 4 with a cross deadzone shape. His controller deadzone is 0.05, dodge deadzone 0.60, and both sensitivities at 1.30. His binds are unusual but clean: boost on Circle, jump on X, powerslide and free air roll both on Square, air roll left on R1, ball cam on Triangle. He runs no dedicated air roll right and doesn't use a claw grip. His camera sits at FOV 110, height 100, angle -3, distance 270, stiffness 0.35, and swivel speed 6.90. His setup is a great example that you don't need paddles or a claw grip to compete at the top.
Squishy Muffinz
Squishy is one of the most famous players ever, known for his mechanics and the ceiling-shot era highlights. He runs a cross deadzone with controller deadzone at 0.05 and a high dodge deadzone around 0.70 to 0.75. His sensitivities sit up at about 1.43 for both steering and aerial. Those are on the higher end, which fits his fast, mechanic-heavy style. If you want to try snappier handling, his numbers are a good target, though that sensitivity can feel twitchy if you're not used to it.
JSTN
JSTN, famous for his Season 5 world championship ceiling shot, runs deadzone 0.05, dodge deadzone 0.70, and both sensitivities at 1.40. That's right in the middle of the competitive pack, a balanced setup that leans slightly faster than stock. If you want one copy-paste baseline that won't feel extreme in either direction, JSTN's numbers are a safe pick.

What to take from these
Notice the pattern. All three run a controller deadzone at or near 0.05. All three keep steering and aerial sensitivity matched. Dodge deadzones cluster between 0.60 and 0.75. The binds differ a lot, which tells you the exact buttons matter less than the principle: boost and a directional air roll on the shoulders, thumbs on the sticks, nothing stacked that you'd press at the same time.
Copy the numbers first, since those are close to universal, then tinker with the binds until they stop fighting you. Give any new setup at least a few sessions before you judge it, because muscle memory takes time to rebuild.
