Persona 5 Royal Third Semester Unlock Guide: Confidant Deadlines and Missable Content
Maruki's rank 9 deadline, the other confidant cutoff dates, and the content you lose out on in Persona 5 Royal if you miss them.
Persona 5 Royal looks like it wraps up in December. It doesn't. There's a whole third semester of story sitting behind one school counselor and one date in November, and the game only sort of hints at it. Miss the cutoff and your run ends the same way vanilla Persona 5 ended, no new palace, no new party members, none of the January story. So before you binge every free evening on the batting cages, it pays to know which links actually have clocks on them. There are three, and only one of them is a hard gate.
The Required Confidant Deadline
One requirement decides whether January exists: Takuto Maruki, the Councillor confidant, needs to hit rank 9 before November 17. That's it. Nothing else on your save file gates the third semester. Not Kasumi, not Akechi, not your social stats, not how many palaces you aced.
Maruki is the counselor who starts at Shujin on 5/13, and rank 1 kicks off on its own that day. You'll find him in the practice building on the first floor, outside the nurse's office, after school. He's a school-only link, so no evenings and no holidays. He hangs around on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, which is honestly a pretty generous spread compared to some of the other confidants.
The catch is that his link sits parked at rank 5 until after September 19, right around when you're back from the Hawaii trip (September 20 or so). Before that you can rank him up at a relaxed pace. After that, the game opens the floodgates and you can pretty much see him daily. That gives you roughly eight weeks to knock out ranks 6, 7, 8, and 9 before 11/17. Not brutal, but each rank takes a full scene, and rank 9 needs rank 8 done first. Show up on November 16 sitting at rank 6 and you're toast.
| Date | What happens | | --- | --- | | 5/13 | Maruki arrives at Shujin, Councillor rank 1 starts automatically | | Through 9/19 | Link can climb to rank 5, then it's capped | | After 9/19 | Cap lifts, ranks 6-9 open up, he's around almost daily | | 11/17 | Rank 9 deadline. Miss it and the third semester is gone for good | | 11/18 | Rank 10 happens on its own if you made the deadline |
Make it in time and rank 10 comes to you as a story event on 11/18, no hangout needed. Miss it and his link just stops wherever it is, and the story rolls toward the December ending without him.
The nice part is that ranking Maruki up isn't charity. A chunk of his ranks pay out +5 to Joker's max SP each, which is huge for long palace runs, and his ability track is all quality of life. Detox X at rank 2 gives you a chance to shake off status effects for free, Flow at rank 3 can hand you Charge or Concentrate at the start of a fight, and Mindfulness at rank 5 can tick your SP back up when you're running low. Keep a Councillor persona in your pocket when you see him for bonus points, same as any link. There are no social stat gates on him either, which makes him one of the easier bonds in the game to keep alive. If you only ever follow one confidant walkthrough, make it his.
Helpful Optional Confidants
So who else deserves calendar space? Two Royal-only links, and they're worth understanding because their cutoffs work differently from Maruki's.
Kasumi Yoshizawa, the Faith
Her rank 1 starts through the story on 5/30. After that she's a Kichijoji regular in the daytime, and her schedule is kind of a pain. Through June and again from September through November, she's only around on Wednesdays. In July, August, and December she'll sometimes also show up on Thursday and Sunday. Once a week, basically, so skipping her days adds up fast.
Her cutoff is December 22. You need rank 4 done before that date to keep the link alive. Rank 5 opens up after 12/22, and ranks 6 through 10 only exist inside the third semester. Rank 6 unlocks on 1/13, and if she isn't at rank 5 by then, her link stalls there forever. From there it moves fast, one rank every day or two, with rank 10 landing on 1/19 and her ultimate persona Vanadis coming with it.
Her link won't lock you out of January itself, so in that sense she's optional. But sleep on her and you lose everything past rank 5: her best scenes, her full backstory, and her romance, since the romance choice only shows up at rank 9 around 1/18. There is no path to dating her without the third semester. Rank 4 also hands you the grappling hook for palaces, which you'll end up using constantly, so she pays her rent either way.
Goro Akechi, the Justice
Rank 1 starts through the story on 6/10. He hangs out at the jazz club in Kichijoji at night: Saturday nights, plus Tuesday or Wednesday nights depending on where you are in the story, and he's always around when it rains. Rainy evenings are free real estate, so use them.
Get him to rank 8 by 11/17 and ranks 9 and 10 unlock automatically during Shido's palace in late November. Miss rank 8 and his link freezes right there before the Black Mask fight, and no, you can't fix it later.
A few of his answers actually matter, so don't sleepwalk through them:
- At rank 7, when he asks you to ditch your team and join him, answer "You're my rival."
- At rank 8, when he throws down the duel, pick "I accept."
- On the night you secure the route to Shido's treasure, answer "I want to keep our promise."
Maxing Justice is what gets you the full true ending stretch: Crow fighting beside you in January with his own scenes, his third persona Hereward, and the extra ending beats. Without it you still get the third semester, just a lighter version of it. His link also has stat gates, unlike Maruki's. Expect to need Charm 3 around rank 3 and Knowledge 4 around rank 7, and the Knowledge one is the trip-up, since few people have Scholarly-tier Knowledge by October if they haven't been grinding it.
The three at a glance
| Confidant | Arcana | Starts | Hangs out at | Cutoff | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Takuto Maruki | Councillor | 5/13 | Shujin practice building, 1F (daytime) | Rank 9 by 11/17 | | Kasumi Yoshizawa | Faith | 5/30 | Kichijoji promenade (daytime) | Rank 4 by 12/22, rank 5 by 1/13 | | Goro Akechi | Justice | 6/10 | Kichijoji jazz club (night) | Rank 8 by 11/17 |
Calendar Milestones to Watch
The whole unlock comes down to a handful of dates spread across the year. Here's the run of it, ending with the third semester's own clock.
| Date | Why it matters | | --- | --- | | 5/13 | Maruki arrives, Councillor starts | | 5/30 | Kasumi's Faith starts through the story | | 6/10 | Akechi's Justice starts through the story | | 9/19 | Maruki's rank 5 cap lifts after the Hawaii trip | | 11/17 | Double deadline: Maruki rank 9, Akechi rank 8 | | Late Nov | Shido's palace, where Justice ranks 9-10 land on their own | | 12/22 | Kasumi needs rank 4 done by today | | 12/24 | The third semester begins in the evening | | 1/2 | First trip into the new palace in Odaiba | | 1/9 | Turn Maruki's offer down, or the game ends early | | 1/13 | Kasumi's rank 6 opens, then ranks 7-10 over the next week | | 2/2 | Answer "We're stopping Maruki," third personas for Akechi and Kasumi | | 2/3 | Final boss: Azathoth, then Adam Kadmon | | 2/14 | Valentine's Day events | | 3/14 | White Day, pick one confidant to spend it with | | 3/19-3/20 | Farewell events, then the ending |
A few of those deserve a closer look. The 11/17 date is the big one, and it's really a double deadline since Akechi's rank 8 lands the same day. Late November gets busy with Shido's palace too, which is exactly why you don't want to be grinding Maruki scenes then. And December 24 is sneaky: the regular story stuff still plays out through the day, then the third semester starts that evening if you met the requirements. From 1/1 you get the New Year's shrine visit, and on 1/2 you walk into the new palace for the first time.
The first week of January is a scavenger hunt. Your friends are all living inside pleasant dream versions of their lives, and you spend 1/3 through 1/8 snapping each one out of it: Ann in the Shibuya Underground Mall, Makoto at Shibuya Station, Ryuji at Shujin, Yusuke in Ueno, Haru in Kichijoji, and Futaba in Akihabara. It's story content, not free time, so just enjoy the ride.
After that the month loosens up. Palace trips, Mementos requests (new ones keep showing up in January), darts, the gym, whatever you like. Just keep the two danger dates in mind: 1/9 and 2/2. Both are deal-or-no-deal moments where accepting the offer cuts the game short instead of the true ending.
What Changes After the Main Story
The third semester isn't an epilogue, it's basically a fourth act. Once the evening of 12/24 rolls over, the world has quietly been rewritten so that everyone got what they wanted, and the game spends January pulling that apart.
The headline is the new palace: Maruki's Palace, a giant research laboratory in Odaiba with a place called Eden, a garden of a floor, up at the very top. It's got some of the trickiest cognition-warping puzzles in the game, and it ends on 2/3 with a two-phase final boss. You fight Azathoth first, then Adam Kadmon. Bring your A-team and a fat SP pool, because that second phase doesn't mess around.
Your roster changes too. This is where Sumire becomes a real party member with a full moveset, and where Akechi fights alongside you with Loki. You even unlock the Joker and Crow Showtime attack, which is a genuinely fun payoff for keeping up with him. If you maxed his Justice link the right way, his scenes through the finale hit noticeably harder.
Then there's the big mechanical carrot: third-tier personas. Any party member whose confidant hit rank 10 before January can evolve their persona one more time, and you trigger it by spending an afternoon with them during the third semester. One day per person, so plan a few free slots. The list:
- Ryuji: Captain Kidd to Seiten Taisei to William
- Morgana: Zorro to Mercurius to Diego
- Ann: Carmen to Hecate to Celestine
- Yusuke: Goemon to Kamu Susano-o to Gorokichi
- Makoto: Johanna to Anat to Agnes
- Futaba: Necronomicon to Prometheus to Al Azif
- Haru: Milady to Astarte to Lucy
- Akechi: Loki to Hereward (happens on its own on 2/2)
- Kasumi: Cendrillon to Vanadis to Ella (also automatic on 2/2)
Those awakenings are some of the best character moments Royal added, and there's no way to see them without the third semester. Same goes for the true ending itself: refuse Maruki's deal on 1/9, then on 2/2 when Akechi demands a straight answer, pick "We're stopping Maruki." Accept either offer and you get one of the early endings instead, plus a save file that skips the actual payoff.
The tail end of the game changes shape too. The true ending route gets the full Valentine's Day events on 2/14, White Day on 3/14 where you pick one person to spend the day with, and the farewell events on 3/19 and 3/20 where maxed confidants give you keepsake items. None of that exists on the vanilla path.
And here's the part that stings if you blow the deadline. Miss Maruki rank 9 and the game just ends in December the way vanilla Persona 5 did. No Odaiba palace, no Sumire, no third-tier personas, no true ending, somewhere around 20 hours of content by most counts. You also lock yourself out of ever maxing Councillor and Faith, since their last ranks only exist inside January. Justice can still max on the vanilla path, funnily enough, because its ranks 9 and 10 arrive during Shido's palace in November. So the missable list isn't just "an extra dungeon," it's two confidants, two party members' full arcs, and the actual ending of the game.
Checklist Before the Deadline
Run down this list before mid-November and you'll walk into January with everything intact.
- Maruki at rank 8 by early November. That leaves his rank 9 scene as the only thing between you and the deadline, with buffer days to spare. If it's 11/10 and he's at rank 7, drop everything else.
- Akechi at rank 8 by 11/17. Keep Charm and Knowledge climbing from summer onward (you'll want 3 and 4 respectively), take every rainy-night invite, and answer his rank 7 and 8 scenes correctly.
- Say the three Akechi lines right. "You're my rival" at rank 7, "I accept" the duel at rank 8, and "I want to keep our promise" on the night you secure Shido's treasure route.
- Kasumi at rank 4 before 12/22, then rank 5 in the last few December days. That keeps her eligible for the January ranks, her romance, and Ella.
- Carry a matching persona. Councillor, Faith, or Justice in your roster when you hang out with each of the three, for the bonus affection points. It genuinely saves days.
- Max the party links you care about. Third-tier personas need rank 10 before January. Pick your favorites early, since you can't fit all of them and every other confidant into one run comfortably.
- Keep a save from mid-November. If anything went sideways, you want to redo two weeks, not sixty hours.
- In January, refuse both deals. Turn Maruki down on 1/9, and answer Akechi with "We're stopping Maruki" on 2/2.
If you remember one date out of all of this, make it November 17. Maruki's office door closes that day, and everything Royal added on top of Persona 5 closes with it.
