Hades Mirror of Night Guide: Darkness Upgrades and Talent Choices
How to spend Darkness at Hades' Mirror of Night, which talents to buy first, when to swap to the green alternates, and how the one-key reset works.
The Mirror of Night hangs on the left wall of Zagreus's bedroom, and it's where most of your permanent power in Hades comes from. You feed it Darkness between runs, and it hands back talent ranks that stick with you forever. The tricky part is that Darkness is scarce early, Chthonic Keys get pulled toward weapons, and every slot on the board has two versions competing for the same resources. The nice part is that almost nothing you do here is truly permanent, so experimenting is cheap.
Unlocking Mirror Talents
Nyx gave Zagreus the Mirror, and it works like a shop where Darkness buys permanent ranks. When you first get it, only four rows are live:
- Shadow Presence / Fiery Presence, a damage pair (hits from behind vs. hits on undamaged foes)
- Chthonic Vitality / Dark Regeneration, a healing pair
- Death Defiance / Stubborn Defiance, the revive pair
- Greater Reflex / Ruthless Reflex, the dash pair
Only the red side of each pair works at first. The green versions stay locked until Nyx has a particular chat with you, and that conversation triggers once you've collected 300 Darkness in total. Talk to her between runs so you don't sit on that too long, because some of the strongest options on the board are green.
The other eight rows open in batches, paid for with Chthonic Keys at the bottom of the Mirror screen:
| Keys | Rows this opens | | --- | --- | | 5 | Boiling Blood / Abyssal Blood, Infernal Soul / Stygian Soul | | 10 | Deep Pockets / Golden Touch, Thick Skin / High Confidence | | 20 | Privileged Status / Family Favorite, Olympian Favor / Dark Foresight | | 30 | Gods' Pride / Gods' Legacy, Fated Authority / Fated Persuasion |
That's 65 keys to open the whole board. Keys also buy weapons, and the full arsenal runs another 24, so early on every key is a small argument between the Mirror and the courtyard. There's no wrong answer there, for the most part.
Two rules the game doesn't exactly shout about. You can only have one side of a pair active, and swapping sides at the Mirror is free and instant. But both sides rank up separately. A maxed Shadow Presence gives you exactly zero ranks of Fiery Presence until you spend Darkness over there too.
Where does the Darkness come from? Chamber rewards are the main feed, plus Infernal Troves, Charon's shop, the Wretched Broker's rotating trades, fishing, and prophecy rewards. At low Heat, bosses pay out big chunks of Darkness once you've already claimed their bounty for that Heat level: 50 from the Fury fight in Tartarus, 100 from the Lernaean Bone Hydra, 150 from Theseus and Asterius, 250 from the final boss. Also, glance at the weapon rack before you head out. One weapon per run carries the Dark Thirst buff, and taking it means +20% Darkness for that entire escape. Free money, pretty much.
Early Darkness Priorities
The opening buys are basically settled, and they're all on the free rows:
- Death Defiance rank 1, 30 Darkness. A revive at half health for the price of one modest room reward. Nothing else on the board comes close to that value.
- Greater Reflex, 50 Darkness. One extra dash, one rank, done. Extra mobility quietly saves more runs than raw damage does.
- Chthonic Vitality, 10/20/40. Each rank heals 1 health whenever you leave a chamber. Small, but it's steady healing on a budget, and 70 Darkness takes all three ranks.
After that, save toward Death Defiance rank 2 at 500. It's a scary number when you're new, but a second revive is usually what turns a deep run into a finished one. Rank 3 sits at 1,000, and plenty of players reset the whole Mirror just to fund it once their pile gets close (more on that trick at the end).
Shadow Presence soaks up whatever's left. Backstab damage is a real thing with all the dashing you'll be doing, it's just less urgent than not dying.
Once keys start showing up, the 5-key batch is the smart first unlock. Boiling Blood adds +10% attack and special damage per rank against foes carrying one of your Bloodstones, 250 Darkness for all five ranks. Infernal Soul gives one extra Cast stone per rank, two ranks, 100 total. Together they turn your Cast from an afterthought into an actual punch.
The 10-key batch comes next. Thick Skin is +5 max life per rank across 10 ranks, so +50 health for 625 Darkness. You start at 50 life, so this literally doubles your buffer. Deep Pockets is the other half of that batch: +10 starting obols per rank, up to +100 for 525 total. Walking into Tartarus with real money means Charon's first shop is actually usable instead of window shopping.
The 20- and 30-key rows can wait. Privileged Status and Dark Foresight are worth having, but they cost more and they shine once you're building around boons properly. Olympian Favor is a 40-rank, 2,000 Darkness project. Fated Authority starts at 500 per die and climbs to 2,250. Those are projects, not priorities.
Choosing Alternate Talents
Every pair has a red version and a green version, and switching between them is free once Nyx unlocks the greens. The catch is those separate ranks, remember. Flipping sides means starting from zero over there. So which side earns your Darkness?
Shadow Presence or Fiery Presence. Fiery gives +15% per rank against undamaged foes, Shadow gives +10% per rank from behind. Since every fight opens with a fresh enemy, Fiery usually comes out ahead. Shadow is the pick if you love dashing through packs and hitting backs.
Chthonic Vitality or Dark Regeneration. Dark Regeneration turns 30% of any Darkness you pick up into health, 60% at max. Pair it with a Dark Thirst weapon and it out-heals the +1-per-chamber trickle by a mile. Chthonic Vitality is the steadier choice when you're rarely taking Darkness as a reward.
Death Defiance or Stubborn Defiance. Death Defiance is three charges per run at 50% health back, 1,530 Darkness all in. Stubborn Defiance is one revive per chamber at 30%, 600 Darkness, single rank. While you're still learning rooms and dying in normal fights, Stubborn quietly carries runs. Once your deaths cluster in boss rooms, swap back. (Skelly's Lucky Tooth keepsake adds a bonus revive charge either way.)
Greater Reflex or Ruthless Reflex. An extra dash is useful every single room. Ruthless Reflex, +50% damage and dodge for 2 seconds after a perfectly timed dash, is a blast but demands sharp timing. Nine times out of ten, take the dash.
Boiling Blood or Abyssal Blood. Boiling Blood is +50% damage against Bloodstoned foes at max. Abyssal Blood instead cuts their speed and damage by 6% per rank. Raw damage usually ends a fight before crowd control matters, though Abyssal is kind of nice against the fast swarm packs in Elysium.
Infernal Soul or Stygian Soul. More stones to throw versus stones that regenerate on their own, 3 seconds each at max rank. Stygian changes how casting feels entirely, and it's the better fit for certain boon builds covered below. Most players start Infernal and dabble in Stygian later.
Deep Pockets or Golden Touch. Flat 100 obols at the start versus +5% of your current obols every time you clear a region, +15% at max. Deep Pockets is the consistent one. Golden Touch rewards hoarders who skip shops until late in a run.
Thick Skin or High Confidence. +50 max health versus +25% damage while you're above 80% health. Melee scrappers want the health. If you rarely get hit (bow players, you know who you are), High Confidence is a free quarter more damage.
Privileged Status or Family Favorite. Privileged Status is +40% damage against foes suffering at least two status effects. Family Favorite is +5% per different Olympian whose boon you hold. If your builds stack Weak, Hangover, Doom, Chill, that sort of thing, Privileged Status is a monster. Rainbow-boon players get more out of Family Favorite, and it's way cheaper (200 vs. 550).
Olympian Favor or Dark Foresight. Dark Foresight is +2% per rank toward gold laurel rewards (boons, hammers, obols, poms), 1,500 Darkness for all 10 ranks. Olympian Favor is +1% rare-boon chance per rank across 40 ranks, 2,000 total. Foresight pays out every single run, so it comes first for most people.
Gods' Pride or Gods' Legacy. +20% epic chance versus +10% legendary and duo chance. Hunting duo boons? Legacy. Otherwise Pride does more work.
Fated Authority or Fated Persuasion. Authority rerolls a chamber's reward, but only within its own pool (permanent resources can't become run rewards and vice versa, and shops, NPC rooms, and boss rooms won't budge at all). Persuasion rerolls the boons and Well of Charon items you're offered, and it even restocks the Well after you've bought something. Rerouting your build mid-run beats rerouting your rewards, so Persuasion is the late-game pick for most.
Full price list for the whole board, if you like planning ahead:
| Pair | Red ranks | Red total | Green ranks | Green total | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Shadow / Fiery Presence | 5 | 100 | 5 | 100 | | Chthonic Vitality / Dark Regeneration | 3 | 70 | 2 | 90 | | Death Defiance / Stubborn Defiance | 3 | 1,530 | 1 | 600 | | Greater Reflex / Ruthless Reflex | 1 | 50 | 1 | 75 | | Boiling Blood / Abyssal Blood | 5 | 250 | 5 | 300 | | Infernal Soul / Stygian Soul | 2 | 100 | 2 | 180 | | Deep Pockets / Golden Touch | 10 | 525 | 3 | 270 | | Thick Skin / High Confidence | 10 | 625 | 5 | 750 | | Privileged Status / Family Favorite | 2 | 550 | 2 | 200 | | Olympian Favor / Dark Foresight | 40 | 2,000 | 10 | 1,500 | | Gods' Pride / Gods' Legacy | 20 | 2,000 | 10 | 2,500 | | Fated Authority / Fated Persuasion | 8 | 11,000 | 4 | 10,000 |
Maxing every red and green talent runs 35,365 Darkness. Nobody does that in one stretch on purpose, and you never need to.
Matching Talents to Weapons
Most Mirror talents don't care which weapon you're holding. The rows where your weapon actually changes the answer are the Cast pair, the health pair, and the dash pair.
Cast-heavy setups love Infernal Soul and Boiling Blood. More stones in the pool plus bonus damage on anything you've stoned. Varatha the Eternal Spear and Stygian Blade players who fish with casts between swings get a lot out of both, and Artemis's Exit Wounds (bonus damage when stones pop back out of foes) stacks beautifully with the combo. One caveat worth knowing: some Cast boons change how stones behave. Demeter's beam Cast never lodges stones in anyone, so both blood talents go dead with it. Zeus's Cast bolts lodge the stone in the last enemy hit, which still works, just in an awkward spot. For those builds, Stygian Soul is the smarter side since your stones return on their own anyway.
Dash-happy weapons want Greater Reflex. The Stygian Blade's dash-strike and the Twin Fists of Malphon live on mobility, and an extra dash charge is pure fuel for them. Ruthless Reflex technically suits the same playstyle, but only if your timing is genuinely sharp.
Ranged weapons pair with High Confidence and Fiery Presence. Coronacht the Heart-Seeking Bow and Exagryph the Adamant Rail fight from outside melee range, so staying above 80% health is a realistic goal instead of a dream. A quarter more damage plus +75% on openers is a lot of free output for playing the way you were going to play anyway.
Brawlers want Thick Skin. Aegis the Shield of Chaos and the fists take hits by design. Fifty extra health does more for a front-line style than a damage bonus that switches off the first time you get clipped.
Everything else is build-flavored rather than weapon-flavored. Privileged Status cares about your boons and status effects, not your arms. Dark Foresight and the rarity rows help every weapon equally. So settle the weapon-specific rows first, then fill in the generic ones.
Resetting a Build Efficiently
After a handful of escape attempts, a reset option shows up at the bottom of the Mirror. Pay 1 Chthonic Key and it refunds every point of Darkness you've spent, wiping all ranks on both the red and green sides. No fees, no partial payouts. You get the full list price back on everything.
The row unlocks survive a reset. Those 65 keys you spent opening batches stay spent and stay open, so you never have to re-buy the board itself. But ranks on both sides of every pair drop to zero, so if you'd ranked up red and green on the same slot, you're rebuying both.
A few good moments to hit the button:
- Funding Death Defiance rank 3. Sitting on 700-800 Darkness with points scattered around? Reset, rebuy the must-haves, and put the difference straight into that 1,000 charge.
- Abandoning a grind. Say you're 20 ranks into Olympian Favor and decide Fated Persuasion matters more. A reset moves all 1,000 spent Darkness over instead of making you earn it twice.
- A weapon-specific push. Climbing Heat with the rail on a don't-get-hit plan? Reset into High Confidence and Fiery Presence for the attempt, then flip back later.
One thing you don't need a reset for: flipping a talent from red to green. That's free at the Mirror and your ranks on each side stay put. Resets are for moving Darkness between talents, nothing else.
Keys never really stop mattering, so keep a spare or two on hand. 89 keys covers every permanent unlock in the game (65 Mirror, 24 arsenal), the Resource Director ranks want 100 more if you're the completionist type, and the Wretched Broker takes them in trade too. One key to rebuild your entire setup is the cheapest do-over in the Underworld. Charon would never be that generous.
