
Dead by Daylight Generator Repair and Gen Rush Tactics
How generators work in Dead by Daylight, plus toolbox math, gen rush builds, killer regression counterplay, and reading gen progress across the map.
Generators are the whole game in Dead by Daylight. Chases, hooks, and hatch saves are all fighting over the same clock, and that clock is five generators getting repaired. Most players lose matches not because they got outplayed in a chase, but because they repaired the wrong gens, in the wrong order, with the wrong people standing next to them. Here's how the objective actually works under the hood, and how to squeeze more out of it whether you're holding M1 on a gen or kicking one into next week.
Generator Spawn Logic and Efficient Rotation
How many gens spawn and where
A normal trial spawns 7 generators at fixed spawn points around the map, and you only need to finish 5 of them. The catch is that every map has more possible spawn locations than gens, so the layout shuffles a bit from match to match. The same corner that had a gen last game can be empty this game.
Since survivors can't see gen auras by default, you're stuck finding them the old way. Two tricks help a lot:
- Outdoor gens come with a light mast on top. Blinking, flickering lights means the gen is still incomplete. Steady lights mean it's done, and the killer can see that from anywhere too.
- Indoor gens hook into the room's normal light fixtures. On Léry's Memorial Institute, a flickering sign means there's an unfinished gen in that room. Same deal with houses on Haddonfield and the basement areas in Springwood. If the lights are steady, the gen there is already finished.
As of Patch 9.2.0, red generators also have a glowing orange ring on their pistons, which makes them easier to spot from a distance.
Why you should almost never double up
Every generator needs 90 charges to finish, and one survivor repairs at 1 charge per second. So a solo repair takes 90 seconds. Simple so far.
The problem is the co-op penalty. When two or more survivors work the same gen, the game slaps a stacking -15% efficiency penalty on each person's repair speed:

Look at what happens from two people to four. Going from solo to duo cuts 37 seconds off the gen. Going from three to four saves you about two seconds, and it parks your entire team in one spot while the other side of the map does nothing. Four on one gen is pretty much always a throw unless it's the last gen and the killer is far away.
The default state killers hate most is four survivors on four different gens. That forces them to jog across the map to apply any pressure at all. Two people splitting to two separate gens each get 53 seconds of progress into two different objectives instead of one.
Rotation and the 3-gen trap
The rotation rule is simple: think tic-tac-toe. You don't want the last three remaining gens sitting in a tight cluster, because that hands the killer a fortress. A killer defending a 3-gen has a patrol loop of maybe 10 seconds. A killer patrolling three gens spread across the map is looking at 30 to 40 seconds per loop, and that gap is the whole game.
So the priority targets early are the gens in the middle of the map and any tight cluster of three you can see. Déjà Vu helps here, since it permanently highlights the 3 gens closest to each other and even repairs them 4/5/6% faster depending on tier. Kill the middle gen early and you've broken up nearly every potential 3-gen on the map.
Keep a running count in your head as gens pop. If two gens in the north corner are done, don't wander to the third one sitting next to them. Rotate across the map and leave the leftovers as far apart as you can. A solo survivor grinding out a scary middle gen is usually worth more than three survivors safely finishing a corner gen that poisons your endgame.
Toolbox and Perk Combos for Faster Repairs
Toolboxes, ranked for gen work
Toolboxes dump their charges into a gen faster than your hands do, and the speed bonus also controls how fast the charges drain. The current repair-focused picks:
- Engineer's Toolbox (Very Rare): 16 charges at +100% repair speed. It burns hot and dies fast, about 8 seconds of use.
- Mechanic's Toolbox (Rare): 16 charges at +75%.
- Commodious Toolbox (Rare): 32 charges at +50%, and it also sabos hooks 50% faster. The flexible all-rounder.
Alex's Toolbox is more of a sabotage box these days, so don't grab it for gen speed.
Add-ons that actually matter
The two workhorse add-ons are cheap and stackable:
- Socket Swivels (Uncommon): +30% repair speed on the box.
- Wire Spool (Uncommon): +12 charges of capacity.
For the Engineer's Toolbox, doubling up on charge add-ons is usually the play, since its speed is already maxed and extra charges get more total work out of it. For the Commodious, a speed add-on typically beats a second charge add-on because its base speed is lower. Either way you're looking at roughly a full gen's worth of acceleration from one well-built box.
The flashy option is Brand New Part, an ultra rare that got reworked a while back. Press the item button next to a gen to install it, hit a difficult skill check, and the gen's repair requirement drops by a flat 10 charges, so 90 becomes 80. It's consumed on use, and the toolbox usually goes with it. Clean value, no RNG, just don't choke the check.
Perks that stack with items
The big three speed perks:
- Prove Thyself (Dwight): +6/8/10% repair speed per other survivor within 4 meters, up to 18/24/30%, and it shares the bonus with everyone in range. This is the one perk that genuinely flips the co-op penalty math. Two people with Prove Thyself Tier 3 on one gen are repairing at 0.85 speed plus a 10% boost, which mostly cancels the penalty and gets the gen done around 48 seconds instead of 53.
- Déjà Vu (general perk, free): permanent aura on the 3 closest gens, plus 4/5/6% repair speed on them. Boring, always on, genuinely one of the best gen perks in the game right now because it also solves your rotation problem.
- Resilience (general perk): 3/6/9% faster at everything, gens included, while injured. Staying hurt has a cost, but if you're comfortable dodging in chase, that's up to 9% repair speed for free.
Then there's the skill check engine. Hyperfocus (Rebecca Chambers) builds a token per great skill check while repairing, up to 6 tokens, and each token pumps up the skill check bonus progression by up to 30% of base value per token at Tier 3. Pair it with Stake Out (David Tapp), which converts good skill checks into greats while you sit in the terror radius unchased, and a single gen can melt in under a minute if your hands are steady. Fast Track (Yun-Jin Lee) fits the same build: unhook someone to bank up to 1/2/3 tokens, then cash them all on a great repair skill check to permanently cut 5 charges per token off that gen's requirement.
A reasonable loadout for pure gen speed: Déjà Vu, Prove Thyself, Hyperfocus, plus one chase or info perk so you don't die. Four gen perks on one build tends to mean you never get to actually use them.
Gen Rushing as a Coordinated Survivor Team
The two-adjacent-gens pattern
Real gen rushing isn't four people on one gen. It's coordinated splitting. The strongest pattern in a SWF is two pairs working two gens near each other, close enough that a teammate can peel over to help finish, far enough that one kick can't hit both. When the killer commits to a chase, everyone converges on whatever's closest to done.
The survivor activity HUD makes this way easier than it used to be. You can see what each teammate is doing from the left side of the screen, including gen progress bars, so in solo queue you can at least tell that two people are already repairing and you should be somewhere else. Use it. Half of bad gen routing is just not looking.
Trading hooks for gens on purpose
The blunt version of coordinated gen rush: someone takes a chase, and the other three commit to gens for the entire chase. A decent chase against a mid-tier killer eats 30 to 60 seconds. Three survivors repairing separately for 45 seconds puts over two charges-per-second of combined progress into the map. If you're the one being chased, your job is to waste as much of the killer's time as you can in a part of the map far from the gens being worked. If you're repairing, your job is to not wander over to "help" the chase.
When someone gets hooked, the standard tempo is one person goes for the unhook, one keeps repairing, and the fourth either heals the unhooked player or starts the next gen depending on what the killer does. Don't send two people for a rescue while your toolbox player stands alone in the killer's patrol path.
When to actually stack a gen
There are legit times to dogpile:
- The gen is at 90%+ and the killer's terror radius is closing in. Two people finishing it in a few seconds beats letting a kick wipe 5% plus regression.
- It's the last gen and you know where the killer is. Speed matters more than efficiency at that point.
- You're running Prove Thyself and someone with you has it too. The perk exists to make co-op worth it.
- Grim Embrace just blocked every gen for 40 seconds. Wait it out, then hit the same gen hard the second it unblocks, because the killer is counting on that dead time.
One more thing: since gen tapping got removed, you can't just graze a regressing gen to stop the bleed. You have to repair a full 5% before regression actually stops, which is about 5 seconds of committed work. Plan for that when you decide whether to commit to a kicked gen or leave it.
Don't rush yourself into a 3-gen
The classic SWF failure mode is winning the early game so hard that you finish every gen on one side of the map by minute four, then spend the next ten minutes dying in the corner 3-gen you built. Fast is good. Fast and dumb is a loss. Your last three gens should be spread out, and if that means leaving a 60% gen alone for a while, leave it.
Kicking and Regression Counterplay for Killers
Survivors get the repair math, so here's the other side of the board. Your job as killer is to make repairs expensive, and these days that's less about raw regression and more about spending your regression events where they matter.
The base kit and the 8-event limit
Kicking a gen takes 1.8 seconds and instantly knocks off 5% of its total progression, then it regresses on its own at a quarter of repair speed, so 0.25 charges per second. Left alone, that slowly bleeds out.
The big rule since Patch 7.5.0: each gen can only take 8 regression events, where a regression event is any instant loss of 2.5% or more, whether from your boot or a perk. From event 4 onward you'll see spikes growing around the gen, and at 8 the gen locks up and can never be regressed again by anything in your loadout. Survivors failing skill checks don't count toward the limit, so their mistakes are always free damage for you.
Two practical consequences. One: don't kick gens with 1 or 2% progress. The event still counts against your 8 even though you removed almost nothing. Two: chase-heavy killers who can't afford kick detours should lean on perks that trigger automatically, because your manual kicks are a limited resource now.
Regression perks worth the slot
- Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance (Artist): 4 tokens, each first Scourge Hook hit pops the gen with the most progress for 10/15/20% and makes the repairers scream. Still one of the highest-used killer perks for a reason. It auto-targets the gen your opponents care about most, no patrol needed.
- Pop Goes the Weasel (Clown): after a hook, you get 35/40/45 seconds to manually damage a gen for a total of 20% regression. Big chunk, but it costs you the walk to the gen.
- Eruption (Nemesis): kick gens to mark them yellow, and the next time a survivor goes down, every marked gen explodes for 10%, starts regressing, and reveals anyone repairing it for 8/10/12 seconds. 30-second cooldown. Great on killers who down people fast.
- Call of Brine (Onryō): after a kick, the gen regresses at 130/140/150% of normal speed, its aura stays yellow for you, and you get a loud noise notification whenever someone hits a good skill check on it. Basically a tracking radar bolted onto faster regression.
- Overcharge (Doctor): your kick plants a trap. The next survivor to touch the gen faces a difficult skill check, and failing it costs an extra 2/3/4% plus the normal penalty. Regression speed also ramps from 85% to 130% over 30 seconds. Pairs nastily with Call of Brine on the same gen.
- Grim Embrace (Artist): every first hook blocks all gens for 6/8/10 seconds once you walk 16 meters from the hook, and the fourth token blocks everything for 40 seconds and shows you the Obsession. That's free pressure you don't have to walk anywhere to collect.
Killer game plan
Early game, pick your patrol lane before the match starts. You can see every incomplete gen's aura in red at all times, so identify the potential 3-gen and treat those gens as your babies. Let the far gens go if you have to. Every gen survivors finish on the far side of the map is one you never have to defend again.
Mid game, kick with intent. A kick on a 70% gen with Call of Brine on it is worth way more than a kick on a 15% gen. And remember the 5% rule cuts both ways: a survivor has to stand there for roughly 5 seconds to stop your regression, so even a "wasted" kick forces time out of someone if they want to save the progress.
Late game, if you've protected your cluster, you're now patrolling a 10-second loop while the survivors have to commit bodies to gens they can't easily finish. That's the win condition. Just watch the event counter on each gen, because burning your 8 events on kicks early means your Pain Res tokens have nowhere to land later.
Reading Gen Progress to Predict Killer Pressure
What the game shows you
You've got more information than you probably use:
- The piston animation. Gens have four pistons that start moving as progress climbs. One pair moving slow means the gen just started. All four pistons slamming means it's nearly done. You can read a gen's rough progress from across the room without touching it, and so can the killer.
- The activity HUD. Teammates repairing show it, and their gen's progress bar is visible to you now. If two bars are nearly full, expect the killer to be sprinting toward one of them, because they got a loud noise notification the last time a gen popped and they know the pattern.
- Completed gen lighting. Finished gens light up steady and bright. Killer sees the same thing. That lit gen is a landmark telling the killer where the survivors just were, and by extension roughly where they're heading next.
- Regression VFX. If you're the one on the gen, the spikes growing around it tell you how many of the killer's 8 regression events are already burned. A fully spiked gen can't be regressed anymore, which makes it the safest gen on the map to commit to.
Predicting where the killer goes
Killers are predictable under time pressure. After a hook, most killers check the nearest one or two gens before re-committing to a chase. After a gen pops, they beeline toward the closest cluster of remaining gens. After Pain Resonance or Eruption fires, they're looking at the gen that just exploded or the aura that just lit up.
So work backwards from that. The gen right next to a fresh hook is about to get visitors. The gen far from the hook, on the opposite side of the map from the killer's last known position, is where you want your toolbox. Same logic for the endgame: once you're on last gen, the killer's choice is between the two most likely remaining gens, so either split to force them to guess, or stack the one they'd have to cross the whole map to reach.
Telling regression pressure from chase pressure
A gen that's bleeding out with nobody near it means the killer kicked it and left, probably heading toward a chase or a hook. A gen that suddenly stops regressing means a teammate committed to it, so the killer may circle back. And if you hear a gen explode with no one on your team near it, that's Pain Resonance or Eruption firing, which means someone just got hooked or slugged and the killer is about to have free time to patrol.
The players who climb in this game are the ones who treat every gen as an information source, not just a progress bar. The pistons tell you how long it's been worked. The lights tell you where the survivors have been. The spikes tell you how much fight the killer has left in that gen. Put those together and you'll usually know where the pressure is heading about ten seconds before it arrives, which is plenty of time to be somewhere more productive.
One last concrete habit worth building: when a gen pops, don't run to the next closest one out of reflex. Check which side of the map it was on, check your HUD to see who's repairing where, and pick the gen that keeps your remaining spread wide. The team that repairs five spread-out gens beats the team that repairs five fast ones in a corner, pretty much every single match.
